WoW: What's the best proffesion to take up as a mage

I do herbalism/alchemy, but I don't find it that useful unless I'm doing a lot of solo'n in which I need the health potions. But, i've found tailoring to be a huge advantage for priest and mage.

Eh to me staying a live is a little bit more important then making armor. I have a lvl 20 mage and he is a engineer and i wish he was making postions becuase i am always looking for health and mana potions.

I also think you dont really ever need to make your own armr...there are so many drops in this game u barely even have to buy anything
 
tailoring and enchanting kind of go hand in hand. be prepared to be broke a lot though as it is expensive. At least with tailoring you can make bags to sell and items you can disenchant so you can up your enchanting.
 
Tailoring/skinning is what I am now (lots of tailoring recipes require leather). My guild says you should go two gathering professions until you hit 40 and buy your mount (so skinning/mining/herbalism), and I tend to agree. Tailoring isn't all that useful, except for making your own bags. I don't make much of my own armor, my lesser wizard's robe is about it, everything else is from drops/quests.

I was tailoring in beta, that's why I picked it up for retail.

Herbalism/alchemy is just as useful to a mage though. Once you get Mana Shield, you can escape a lot of tight situations by popping sheilds and using mana potions to replenish the mana you lose while running/blinking away.

Engineering.... The biggest weakness of the Mage is the vulnerability of cloth... so go with either Engineering or Alchemy.... both of which offer you means to improve that durability issue. All the other professions you can pretty much buy if you make enough money anyway.

I went leatherworking/skinning for my rogue. I'm at 225 now, and I've realized that A) I'm never going to wear any of the crap I make cause I can buy better, and B) I barely make any money cause the auction house is flooded with the same things that every other leatherworker and their mother is making. I assume the same goes for blacksmithing and tailoring.

Engineering is of limitied utility for any class, but especially for a mage. Enchanting might be useful to make money off of, but its VERY time consuming. Alchemy is alright, but since it doesnt stack with effects, and you can certainly do fine without them, and buy the ones you need from others, is also very useless, and herbs dont sell for much.

My suggestion is to go skinning and mining all the way, and just sell what you farm, and buy the stuff you need. Been working great for my druid so far...I've never had so much money at so low a level before.
 
I'd do tailoring as a mage. It gives a good sense of satisfaction to make & wear your own armor. I wouldn't do enchanting just yet, a gathering profession (mining, skinning, herbalism) might be a better idea while leveling up so that you're not too hard up on cash. At 60, if you like, you can switch to enchanting. Getting to 250 is a cinch, just blast through lower level instances for greens & blues to disenchant.

Herbs are a goldmine on my server (IceDown). I did alch/herb on my shaman, but recently switched from alchemy to enchanting. I never have problems selling stacks of herbs now, though I'm considering switching to engineering.

My Mage is currently level 26, almost 27. I went Herbalism/Alchemy. Despite the fact that Mana and Health potions are good, they arn't useful if you are partied up with a Priest, and in most cases, it is just easier to drink your conjured water than waste a mana potion unless in dire need.

The Health potions would be great, and understandably are great in several situations since Mage's can't take a lot of damage. However, my level 21 druid does leatherworking and i've found that it is very useful to be able to make your own armor. If you really work at your profession, you are able to get a substantial boost in armor at a lower level. I think that would be very important and probably overall more profitable in the long run.

first aid is a secondary profession/job and sword fighting isn't a job.
you can still learn 2 primary jobs.

I have 50 points in first aid. Do I automatically upgrade to higher level in first aid or do I need to buy it?
