Wow what a difference disabling ipv6 on ubuntu makes!

I've been using ubuntu for quite some time and noticed that network apps and web browsing seem to be a bit sluggish when using it. Today I came across an article on the ubuntu forums that mentioned disabling ipv6 in order to speed up things. I tried it and WOW! Does it ever make a difference!

I just wanted to stop by and spread the info just in case anyone else is having the issue

I wonder why ipv6 slows it down that much.

EDIT: According to rifleman in the original thread (not the one linked above) Ubuntu looks to connect to a system using ipv6 first and that has to die before it'll try ipv4.
 
Yeah, I've noticed the same. It's not so much that the connection itself is slow (I get the same download rates in Ubuntu than in XP) but it just takes forever for the connection to get stablished with the server. I'll try this tonight when I get home from work.

I noticed the same in Xubuntu (normal transfer rates but it takes forever to connect to the server) and I wonder if IPv6 loads into Xubuntu's kernel by default as well. Probably does...I'll check when I go visit my folks this weekend.
 
I don't understand the problems it causes in Ubuntu. It's also crazy it's been going on since the beginning.. Some don't even acknowledge it's a problem.. To me it discourages new users which have always been *nix's main problem IMO...

Disable ipv6 and you discourage all of the ipv6 users out there.

So when ipv6 become "the standard" will it run as slow as now? If so I love the 90's...

There's nothing wrong with ipv6 (except when I try to convert and write the damn things) - it's ubuntu's implementation that sucks.
 
it' more likely not Ubuntu's fault per se (other then defaulting and waiting), it seems slow because noboday ANSWERS your ipv6 request....in 2008, when IPV6 spreads to 6 users, it will be faster.

No, Ubuntu's implemenation is fine. Hell it's the same one that all Linux distros are using. The problem is that no one responds to IPv6 requests yet so when you do a name lookup and it tries IPv6 first it has to timeout and fall back to IPv4, why it seems to affect Ubuntu more than other distros is up in the air though.
 
Well, regardless i thought it was a useful tip and wanted to pass it along, hope those of you that tried it got as much of an increase in speed as i did
