Yes, I know, of course it makes a difference. But man, what a difference.

My system:

Abit IS7 moboard
P4 2.6ghz 800 fsb
1gb Crucial 3200 RAM
WinXP

Nothing on the system is overclocked.

My original video card was a PNY Ti4600. Doom III benchies:

1. HQ, 1024x768, no vsync, no AA = 9.6 fps
2. MQ, 1024x768, no vsync, no AA = 21.5 fps

Tonight, I installed my new Chaintech 128mb 6800nu. It comes oc'ed at 358/770:

1. HQ, 1024x768, no vsync, no AA = 58.7 fps
with 4xAA = 51.6 fps
2. HQ, 1280x1024, no vsync, no AA = 52.2 fps
3. HQ, 1600x1200, no vsync, no AA = 51.9 fps
4. MQ, 1024x768, no vsync, no AA = 56.3 fps

No other enhancements to make DIII run faster. Now I gotta play around overclocking the card...I started playing the game with the Ti4600 and playing in 1600x1200 at smooth framerates is amazing.

Not bad for a $288 upgrade!

It is quite the difference, although that is probably the maximum difference you will see between the two as compared to basically any other game except doom 3.

Ti4600 old? Thats ok, I have a an Asus GeForce2 GTS. Good card, but at 32 mb am having trouble playing Unreal Tournament 2004 sometimes (quite few maps are very laggy).

Does upgrading video card really help in this type of game? I don't know about the Chaintech 128mb 6800nu, but am looking in price range of $150 - $200, possibly the ATI 9700 Pro.

You should start a new thread about this instead of tacking onto this one. ull be more abpt to get more responses if you do. Also be sure to list your entire system specs. Oh, and Welcome to the forums! :)

Haha... you're telling me! Yes, I know, it a HUGE difference.

I moved from a GF3 Ti200 to a 6800GT.

Think about it, one generation behind yours to one card a bit faster than yours!

pick the brand you like the best, both offer similar performance in the same price range:
nvidia
ati

True. I'm just glad to have a modern video card now. Gotta go back and try some other favorites like BF1942, Desert Combat, UT2k4 and crank up the resolution and AA!

I know exactly what you mean. I went from an old 32MB Radeon 7000 (didn't game much back then) to a 128MB Radeon 9800 Pro. I was totally blown away by the visuals alone.
