Ok, so I'm losing my mind.

this is what I'm trying to do: I want to insert the page number on the first 4 pages of document in roman numerals (i, ii, iii, iv), then on the fifth page START page numbering at 1 (regular numbering).

I cant seem to get it to work like this. anyone know if this is possible?

Yes... IIRC you have to insert a section break instead of a regular page break where you want the page number formatting to change, and you can use different formatting for the footers of different sections.

That said, it's been a while since I've done that, and I don't have winword on this computer to see if I'm sane.

Create a section break so that the fifth page falls in section two.

Edit the footer in section two and make sure link with previous is not selected.

Add your page number to section one and format in roman numerals.

Add your page number to section two and format in regular numbers. There should be an option to reset the page count.
