Wow, VSR (at the desktop) is REALLY nifty...

I just re-installed my Q9300 rig, with a R7 260X 2GB card installed, and upgraded to a 160GB Intel 320 Series SSD. OS is Win7 64-bit.

I just installed the newest Radeon Crimson drivers, 16.7.2 hotfix I think.

Anyways, a little while later after I had rebooted, it popped up a little dialog that it had detected a HighDPI display, and to click on it to set VSR settings.

So I did. I enabled VSR and GPU scaling. (Unsure if the second one was really needed.)

Then, I set my Windows 7 Display Resolution as high as it would go. (2560 x 1440)

Amazingly, the text is still fairly readable.

This is freaking cool! It's like I have a 2560x1440 monitor, inside my 1920x1080 monitor.

Going to try these drivers on my Skylake G4400 rig with the 7950 3GB card next. Hopefully those support VSR too. (This R7 260X is GCN 1.1, as I understand it, whereas the 7950 is GCN 1.0, so it may not support.)

I once did this with my gtx 260, but I didn't like it for desktop use. Was nice for games that didn't have any antialiasing options though.

I can watch 1440P YouTube videos on full-screen now, and they look AWESOME!

Edit: BOOYAH! Installed Radeon Crimson 16.7.2 hotfix on my G4400 @ 4.455Ghz Skylake rig with a 7950 3GB card, and it supports VSR too!

It's like I just upgraded both of my monitors to 2560x1440, for FREE!

Waitasec, I've got a Lenovo laptop with a Beema quad-core in it. Isn't that GCN? If that support VSR, I'll be amazingly happy. Free laptop upgrade to 1080P?

Edit: Nope, sadly, doesn't work. Yet, I hope.

What you're seeing on youtube is the effect of a higher bit rate youtube transmits for 2560x1440 videos. It's not VSR magic.

How big is your monitor screen?

One complaint I have seen is that text can be blurry (because of the anti-aliasing) ---> https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/3cmzo1/amd_vsr_blurrysmaller_text_how_can_i_fix_this/

...... but I wonder if being at a certain size threshold helps the readability?

For example, I have a 28" 720p TV and wonder how well 1080p VSR (the highest VSR resolution supported for 1366 x 768) would look for desktop.

I only used it for games when I had CF 390's. Didn't look so hot on my monitor when I tried it on the desktop. Didn't really monkey around too much with it too be fair.

Well, what triggered it, was AMD Radeon Settings popped up a dialog that I was using a "HighDPI display", and therefore, did I want to enable VSR?

I didn't know that I had a "HighDPI display". It's just a 1080P HDTV. Maybe my monitors have some sort of "Secret sauce" in them? They do support 4:4:4 Chroma.

I've got a 24" 1920x1200 screen.

Text did look bad when I scaled it this way. That's why I only used it in games.

I tried this before just to see how it works. It is a cool gimmick, but I couldn't use it for everyday stuff.
It works much better in games.

You don't need VSR to watch 1440p YouTube videos. You can watch 8K videos on your 720p screen if you want simply by selecting the stream you want manually. You still benefit from the increased resolution and bit rate. Depending upon which scaler is better (browser vs GPU vs monitor) will determine how good it looks.

Everyone else that I seem to have mentioned this too, mentions that the text looked bad or blurry, when using VSR. I don't seem to have (much) of a problem with that.

Yeah, there's the tiniest bit of blur to the text, but it's still perfectly readable to me.

*Shrug*. Works-for-me.

But as you say, you do have a degradation in text quality at the desktop. That is why I do not use this for the desktop, and not even in games most the time.

Never really bothered with VSR in games before, but I've been using it in Deus Ex Human Revolution, which doesn't support native or driver-enforced MSAA or SSAA. Not a demanding game at all these days, so I'm easily able to bump it to the full 1800p the 290X supports. And I gotta say, it looks a lot cleaner even on my 1080p monitor than when using the game's FXAA or MLAA. Tends to make the 290X sound like a blow drier, though.

Like most ppl, I found the desktop text to be too blurry/small.

In games ...game ...BC2 ...it gave a nice wide screen effect at 1200/1440 ...but my aim went to shit!

And it added 8°c to my gpu temps.

So I'm not using it at the mo.
