im looking at stopping playing WoW and picking up EVE, sounds like a few of you have done the same.

my main problems with WoW

- bored of it
- high level instances require me to be unavailable for up to 6 hours
- seems like i waste hours of gameplay for little if no reward
- world no longer seems expansive
- rediculously repetitive

Nothing in EVE requires 6 hours from you. You can learn skills even when not logged in due to their unique skill system. The world is the largest in existence, would take you a million years to search it all.

EVE is very repetitive. There is very little to it. Mine, fight pirates, wage corporate war, rinse and repeat. Of course, all RPG's are repetitive. In fact, most games are repetitive. EVE, like a few other games, however has an involving story that you can take part in. That's not a whole lotta fun though, I think MXO did it better IMO.

RPG's lately have popped up giving very little reward for time spent unlike RPG's of old. Guildwars, for instance, has very, very few items in the game compared to say, Diablo. In fact, everyone basically wears the same armor, only the weapons are different, and even those aren't very differing. I think it's pretty lame IMO. Hellgate: London will bring the magic back.

WoW is terrible as an MMO goes. I've been playing MMO's for nearly 10 years. WoW isn't the worst to hit the market, but I've played much better text RPGs.

World PvP attracts an undesirable element as well though. There's no shortage of kids who'll grief you for hours on end because they think it's some sort of revenge for the fact they get teased in school, or just because they're dumb enough to find it entertaining. All they need is a ruleset which allows it.

I played guild wars, was fun for about a week. Diablo series has always been my favorite (since diablo 1) and I'm also looking for something like wow to get into.
I heard Hellgate london will be amazing, and oblivion looks extremly promising. I would try wow if not for it costing money every month, my pockets ain't that deep...
I never heard much about eve though, can you elaborate as to what makes it good?
And malak can you tell us more since you seem to have a good view of rpg's over the past decade.(what you think is the best, was the best, etc)

I played the 14 day trial of EVE, but due to some weird bug, I couldn't mine properly, so making money was a PITA, and I got just annoyed enough at the thought of having to start a new char that I didn't play for a while, and then my trial ran out.

Seemed like a game with a lot of promise though, maybe I'll give it another go sometime.

I was referring to EVE, where there's one server and the rule is open world PvP

There is nothing really wrong with WoW. I thought it was a lot of fun for six months. To me, that is good lifetime for a game. It does get a little repetitive and ultimately caused me to quit, but it sure is fun leveling up and doing all of the quests.
Eve is very different. I would say it has A LOT more roleplaying potential. The 14-day trial was good while it lasted, but nothing to really keep me paying and playing. It gets very tedious unless you join a corporation (guild/clan/alliance) and actually do things with them. There is a story somewhere about a corporation spending one whole year plotting out their "raid" on another corporation by infiltration then finally struck when everything was in line. End result was over $15000 in REAL LIFE cash after selling the various items and credits (game money). The best thing about it is that it is perfectly within the rules. So that just explains some of the depth of the game if your willing to put time into it and enjoy a role playing aspect.
To be honest, my favorite MMO was Everquest. Back in the day (pre-PoP), it was great. Of course, $oE ruined it by requiring a new timesink expansion every six months and basically made you useless unless you grinded out 500+ AA points. Needless to say, I quit that loooong ago. Still, I wish another game would come along that had the fun factor of fighting actual dragons and completing somewhat entertaining epic quests.

I have played both.

Wow
+ wonderful wonderful world
+ easy to get the hang of
+ fun to explore
- gets repeatative
- less and less things to do the longer you play

Eve
+ more and more things to do the longer you play
+ player driven
+ free updates and addons
+ one universe
- slow slow start
- hard to learn
- demands alot from the player

if you start playing eve, think of it as a hobby and not a game :)

So one "guild" raided another "guild" and stole all their items and money?

I've played both for a good period of time and I dropped my WoW subscription since I wasn't playing it at all. I've been playing EVE for the past 7 months and here are the things I like:

- Skill system is time based. You can train while logged off and not have to worry about getting left behind other players
- While EVE may be repetitive to a certain extent it is a lot less repetitive than most people portray it as, probably because they do not explore all of the options. Here are just a few of the things I've done within game:
* Stolen ore from other players
* Participated in corporate politics
* Participated in wars
And there's much more that can be done that I haven't done yet or don't do much:
* Manufacture various items for sale
* Infiltrate other corporations and sell information to their enemies for money
* Participate in fleet battles (far different than normal PvP, haven't seen an MMO that comes close to a fleet battle in EVE)
* Mine
* Bounty hunt
* Etc.
- The market system in EVE is bar none the most in depth and sophisticated one out of any MMO currently available
- The free updates add a substantial amount of content for no cost
- There are a wide variety of career paths that you can choose from
- The game universe as stated in previous posts is HUGE

To even compare them is ridiculous.

To make a comparison... WoW is the bike you get with stabilisers when you are 3 years old. Eve is the unrestricted Suzuki death machine.

WoW is great for girlfriends to play and the intelectually challenged to feel uber about. Eve is the deepest and most complex MMORPG ever released.

Sure I played WoW for a little while.. it was even fun occassionally... but it was ultimately so shallow. Nothing you do effects the world in WoW... everything you do in Eve has an effect on the world whether you realise it or not.

If you are prepared to get sucked into something you cant escape... try Eve!! 3 years on I am still playing and still finding new ****** to do. Just don't be expecting to be led by the hand in a WoW kinda way. YOU decide your mission, and the only limit to what you can do is your own imagination, intelligence and daring ;)

I tried the trial of EVE and am thinking about paying to play now. It's been a while and I have been playing WoW in the meantime. I did enjoy EVE during the trial though. Some poor bastard forgot to set the combination locks on his cargo containers that he left floating around the system. ;)

If you liked Diablo, then you'll like Hellgate. It's made by the same people. The gameplay videos look extremely promising. Oblivion may be pretty good, but it won't be anything like Hellgate will be.

EVE Online and WoW have similar Elements. Both are extremely loot based. Both have world PvP. Both have crafting. I think that is where similarities end.

EVE is balanced for PvP, not PvE. Period. The EVE devs want to make sure the PvE is there to support the PvP, not the other way around. They also want it to be group based. There is some PvE that you cannot do without help.

EVE has alliances, think of this as a band of Guilds, that have their own war system.

EVE has PvP looting, thus, their are severe rewards and consequences to actions for player combat.

EVE is bigger. Period.

WoW has no real death penalty in PvE or PvP unless you consider fixing your gear or travel time a penalty. I do not, its merely a bathroom break from the action.

WoW's crafting system is a babies toy compared to EVEs.

WoW's epic gear, comparatively, cannot hold a candle to EVEs ultra gear.

WoW's market is only half done. Bind on Pickup gear ruins an attempt at a completely player driven market.

WoW does have a character akin to traditional MMORPGs. You walk, run, fly, swim.

WoW's music is more epic and heart pumping. EVE's is more embracing and relaxing.

WoW's features are fairly upfront and at some point easily grasped in a week. EVE has features so esoteric n00b is a term you will use for yourself in some way or form for years on end.

Depth... WoW cannot touch EVE.

WoW has a steep requirement for is end game PvE. You class choice can make you or break you once you reach lvl 60. Warriors and Rogues have a hard time finding homes for end game simply because they are overplayed. Try and find an end game guild with a warrior if all you have managed to loot are blues.... I dare you. Rogues... well.. good luck finding anyone to take you if you aren't grandfathered into a guild based on local or strong pre-WoW friendships.

WoW's world PvP is underplayed. Battlegrounds has turned WoW PvP into Unreal Tournament. This is the casual player's true endgame.

The level of commitment. EVE lets you train offline. All that is required to level in EVE is you obtaining ingame credits, called ISK, and buying the skills. WoW requires you to kill stuff and/or quest.

WoW has a good set of quests. EVE missions are more repetitive in a sense, because this is not EVE's strong point. However, you will not run every mission in EVE fast. You won't even be able to solo level 4 missions until you have 4+ months of game time under your belt. WoW's quests, once you run through 60 with 1 character do tend to be repeats just from a differnt race angle but are different enough to not really complain. PvP is inevitable during questing or missions ( on WoW PvP servers.)

Wow has rested XP. This is a casual player's godsend.

WoW is grossly imbalanced but is getting better. EVE ins't grossly imbalanced at all. Whiners will always exist in EVE if they loose to x,y,z but it's just whining. It is easy to adapt in EVE and those who don't or can't like to cry. The DEVs usually don't listen to them... Blizzard on the otherhand.... well look at Rogues.

Both will give you some similar elements. Both are great games. It really boils down to how much time investment at the end game you have for WoW and how much imagination you have with EVE. Those with little imagination will find EVE bland... but in reality it is just them.
