So - I had this ultra-cool 16 processor +1 CUDA thing going on but I had to repurpose it for work...

I thought - hey, maybe I can slip my old installation into my new one after all I've got a couple hundred WU waiting to upload and a lot of WU waiting to be processed...

I had Win Vista 64 running and was supposed to install Win Server 2008 R2.

After copying the BOINC folder off to a thumb drive I went ahead and nuked Vista and installed Windows Server 2008 R2. Then I installed the Nvidia driver for the video card, then I installed BOINC being sure the directory structure was just the same as before.

It couldn't connect to a project.

Then I shut down BOINC and copied my BOINC folder back from the thumb drive and then restarted BOINC. It started right back up and was running all the processes right from where they left off!! How cool was that??

Very cool.
It works for XP too.
It was also easier for BOINC 5.x.xx. You only copied one directory.
In the BOINC 6.xx.xx you have to copy two directory trees: the one in \Documents and Settings\Applicaton Data\BOINC and the one in \Program\BOINC.
Here is some more info ...

I've done that occasionally on v5 BOINC & SETI classic, why Berkely had to be a PITA & seperate the folders I don't know!

You don't have to let it install into separate folders, that's just the default.
I change mine to put the data in a subfolder of "Program Files\BOINC" called "Program Files\BOINC\DATA" -
then I only have to copy the BOINC folder and make sure I install BOINC the same way every time.

They did it so you can back up the BOINC data without backing up all the associated programs. I like it, but then I haven't done sneakernetting in the BOINC era.

Seeing as both folders don't take up much space, I don't see why that would be much of an issue, unless you had 100s of WUs I suppose ;).

I tried that once & it refused to install in the same folder, although I didn't create a sub folder like you did. I'll have to do that next time.
