I seriously thought this was an onion link at first. Seriously WTF Texas!? How could this possibly be legal?

A Texas man was sentenced to marry his 19-year-old girlfriend, write down Bible verses and attend counseling by a judge as punishment for punching another man in the jaw, according to local television station KLTV.

The court case stemmed from a February altercation between Josten Bundy, 20, and the ex-partner of his girlfriend, Elizabeth Jaynes. He told the TV station he hit the man twice.

During his sentencing, Judge Randall Rogers told Bundy he would have to marry his girlfriend within 30 days as a condition of his probation. Bundy said that Rogers gave him the option to sit behind bars for 15 days.

Bundy asked if he could call his employers to tell them he was going to jail, but the judge declined. Bundy and Jaynes said they feared Bundy would lose his job, so they applied for their marriage license and scheduled a date with the justice of the peace.

“It just felt like we weren’t going to be able to have the wedding we wanted,” Jaynes told KLTV. “It was just going to be kind of pieced together, I didn’t even have a white dress.”

Attorney Blake Bailey told KLTV that forcing a couple to marry is illegal and that the sentence likely would have been struck down by a higher court.

Calls to Judge Rogers’ office were not returned late Friday.

Judge Rogers asked Bundy if Jaynes was 'worth it' and if he was married to the young woman during his sentencing hearing.
When Bundy answered that he would probably do the same thing again, the judge issued his order.
He said, 'You know, as a part of my probation, you're going to have to marry her…within 30 days.'

I wonder what the legality of this ruling is. Although it'll probably improve the mans outcomes in life, assuming his wife doesn't file for divorce.

Well, people getting married that young already have age against them as far as a long lasting marriage, but going with the circumstances, my guess is their outcome is ever worse.

Well now that the guy has had time to inform his employer of the absurd idiocy of the judge he is facing, I'd go back to court in 30 days and politely tell him that this is the United States and we don't do forced marriages here via threat of incarceration, levy whatever sentence you feel fit due to my above knowledge. Then I would very politely list him a few countries in the Middle East that he might prefer to be in a judge in.

i'd be betting on being able to profit from the publicity on it and at worse, a month in jail will be way cheaper in the long run than getting married.

And he has to write Bible verses too. Talk about forcing your religion onto someone else. Sadly, any blow back would liked be chalked up as the continued "War on Christianity" Fox like to spin so much.

Does he get to pick which verses he gets to write? Oh I could have some fun with that if so...

Any semi competent defense lawyer would tell that client the 15 days in jail option is both cheaper and preferable to being sentenced to marriage in 30 days by countless orders of magnitudes.

The jail time would be much safer for him emotionally and psychologically lol.

This sounds like another nutball judge that needs to be kicked off the bench. The government has no business telling people to read the Bible or to write Biblical verses. It also shouldn't be telling people they should get married. Marriage and Biblical verses should not have a role in sentencing.

OH gee, another Texan does something incredibly stupid. What's that, # 245543?

Any takers on if the judge is a devout GOP member? LOL

I've heard of shotgun weddings, but this ridiculous. Marriage is cruel and unusual punishment.

I wonder if the judge could personally be sued for violating this guys civil rights.

This is also why judges should not be elected (not sure if this one was, but in general they shouldn't be)

A judge's strange ruling led one man to agree to a life sentence in order to avoid a ball and chain...

This is a good example of the countless miscarriages of justice that occur when a gigantic state like Texas is filled to the brim with mostly Republican judges essentially serving for life because they usually run unopposed in elections in nearly every county and city. And this is because the Democrats have basically abandoned even running in at least 80% of ALL the electable positions (like mayors, city council, Justice of the Peace, county Sheriffs, ect.) in these underpopulated backwater jurisdictions. So, the so called "elected" judges are really just the tip of the melting iceberg of political problems that are all too prevalent here. It's much more common to get Republicans running against Republicans in these far flung places, which virtually guarantees you get more of the same, whichever Republican puppet ends up in office. The GOP judges here are basically just fighting among themselves for cushy taxpayer funded jobs and pensions, and couldn't care less about being fair and just.

Really? This is because [OTHER PARTY]? Are you sure you want to go down that road?

Facts are facts. The majority of elected offices usually run completely unopposed unless it's 2 greedy Republicans slugging it out for a payday. The political issues don't matter at all. So there is no "other road" even in play here.

Blaming national parties for what happens at the local level is kind of stupid. Some localities are simply dominated by a single party and the real "election" is the primary. Those candidates can be starkly different from a national or even state-level politician.

I can not really see how was blaming a national party for everything.

Is more a "It is what it is" thing when he said facts are facts.

He's saying the GOP is heavily entrenched there politically more or less, and if anything changes it is just GOP duking it out with each other.

Some states are dominated by a single party, obviously.

I've even been on jury selection for a Federal court in Tampa, and to be honest even during the vetting I was just a bit amazed at the way the Judge proceeded there during the process then at the time.

I think at one point he came close to kicking back in his chair and crossing his legs up on the desk.

Almost amazed me, you could have put a Martini in his hand and he would have looked like he was just hanging out at a party.

The judge involved in the Cash For Kids scandal was a Democrat. Cram your partisan bullshit up your ass, if you can find room in there alongside your head.
