Man, I just went nuts tweaking my system settings and my PC is WAY faster.

I followed the guidelines in MaximumPC magazine's May issue as well as disabling a long list of unnecessary services.

:D

Yeah, I did notice that blowing a bump of tweek into the intake fan on my computer boosts performance.....for a few hours, then it gets slower than it was before. ;)

What "unnecessary services" did you disable?

Also can you sum up what they suggested you do to speed up windows?

The huge "Powered By AMD/Intel" sticker works good too. ;)

server, protected storage, windows installer, and indexing are all important services. You can do without windows installer and indexing, but they are nice. Server and protected storage i would never disable.

Uhh.. Wow. You disabled all of that stuff? Good luck I guess..

BTW, 99% of that stuff only runs when the OS or programs need it. You dont really save anything by disabling them. I guess its alright if you want to kill most of the functionality of your OS.

If you start seeing lots of system errors, you'll know why.

Some key recommended tweaks:

Device Manager Settings:
IDE Channel: set ALL transfer modes from PIO only to DMA if available

Set your Swap file to a static size
System Properties / Advanced Tab / Performance Settings
If you have 256MB - 1GB of RAM set it to double your RAM size.
If you have > 1GB set it to 1.5
e.g. check custom size and set both initial and max to 1000

Shrink your Recycle Bin
set to 1 or 2 % for a large drive or around 200-300MB

Control your GUI
System Properties / Advanced Tab / Performance Settings / Visual Effects
Leave the following uncheck only
Show shadows under mouse pointer
Smooth edges of screen fonts
Use visual styles on windows and buttons

Ok, since I don't know what most of those things do, can someone tell me which ones I should keep or a place to find out what they are? :)

edit: nm, found one here.

I'm using windows 2000 so I have to use the services window in the control panel. They give pretty good descriptions of the services there. Some things are pretty obvious you can shut down (remote registry manipulation, distributed link if you aren't on a network, telnet service if you aren't gonna use telnet, etc.).

I would leave the following enabled (manual if you want, but definitely not disabled):
Alerter
Clip Book
Net Logon
Network DDE
Network DDE DSDM
Network Location Awareness (NLA)
NT LM Security Support Provider
QoS RSVP
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator
Server
Universal Plug and Play Device Host
Windows Installer
Windows Time
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
Task Scheduler
Error Reporting Service
Computer Browser
Most of these services are run only when needed... I always set things to "manual" instead of disabled.
