wow...tutoring honors students

It's one thing to tutor a regular student....

It's another thing to tutor an honors student.....whose parents are sitting there watching you🙁

Talk about pressure🙁

At least I impressed hell out of them, even if my hands were like Ice at the end 😀

smart tutees >> dumb tutees

I don't get it .....

😉

EDIT: Seriously though, the honors kids are usually the ones who "think" they know everything, which becomes problematic when I introduce difficult material at their request....then I have to spend the hour on basics which they "think" they know and they get pissed off because htey thinbk I am belittling them

tonights student was very nice....very "accepting of their faults" 😀 and they actually proved to me that they did in fact profit from the seesion😀

Almost nothing is more satisfying than teaching effectively and seeing promising results:beer:

Strictly math

0 - Calc# (anything besides hgih level stuff, which I am in, and would never subject anyone to or support anyone in due to the hellish nature of having to teach them how to gouge their eyes out before class😉

😀

and how old are you?? the tutee?

Well, I am 21, and I guess I cannot say how old the student was. Usually my students are HS age, but I have had people that are in their 30s...

Hell, as a volunteer, there are 50yr old women that I helped, and I once helped someone who was about 80:Q

I bet it is much harder to teach the older people than the HS students..

Tell me about it. The college engineering calc students really make me earn the money....the business calc is easy incomparison...they are usually a lot prettier too😀 😉 j/king

In actual response to your question, it varies. As age increases, it demonstrates itself as a parabolic equation of ignorance.

When they are young they are quite maluable, but as they reach the apex ~18s-30s, they get stubborn and problematic. As they pass those ages, they get old, wise, and are once again easy to teach.

Usually, ti is the college students who "already know that" that make me repeat everything a dozen times.

It is quite fun though. With certain students, I challenge myself to see who quickly i can get them to grasp the concept. Usually, by 10 seconds after they notify me of the topic, I have at least 3 or for routes planned out to explain it, and many more for the easier stuff like algebra and such.

Sometimes I have to repeat thigns more than ten times🙁 I never lose my patience, but wow, talk about demanding.

What are you going to be taking btw......you seem to be a formidable IT computer guy, so hmmm....let me see.....logic 😉 or perhaps hmmm..reasoning 😉?

Math isn't my strong suit. 😱

I haven't even taken the placement test yet, so I'm not sure where I'll be stuck. I need some calc with analytic geometry though.

Thanks for the link, I'll be lurking there for a while. 🙂

Geez... the parents just sit there and watch? Hopefully they have no clue what you're talking about so they can criticize how you teach things.

Anybody need tutoring for Sociology or Philosophy? 😀

Acutally..now that you mention it🙂

Seriosuly though, the only reason I am not taking Philosophy this upcoming term is that I already have 15 credits for it and they are hard courses.

My question was: my college offers a few phil classes and I was interested in taking one because I've heard that is a good experience overall for someone going into a technical field, where intense logic abilities can really put you ahead.

PHI 101

Introduction to Philosophy I
Introduces a broad spectrum of philosophical problems and perspectives with an emphasis on the systematic questioning of basic assumptions about meaning, knowledge, reality, and values. Lecture 3 hours per week.
3 units min / 3 units max, Lecture
PHI 102

Introduction to Philosophy II
Introduces a broad spectrum of philosophical problems and perspectives with an emphasis on the systematic questioning of basic assumptions about meaning, knowledge, reality, and values. Lecture 3 hours per week.
3 units min / 3 units max, Lecture
PHI 111

Logic I
Introduces inductive and deductive reasoning, with an emphasis on common errors and fallacies. Lecture 3 hours per week.
3 units min / 3 units max, Lecture
PHI 112

Logic II
Evaluates deductive arguments utilizing methods of symbolic logic. Lecture 3 hours per week.
3 units min / 3 units max, Lecture
PHI 115

Practical Reasoning
Studies informal logic and language techniques as they relate to reasoning and argument. Provides practice in analyzing arguments and constructing sound arguments. Lecture 3 hours per week.
3 units min / 3 units max, Lecture

I was thinking that LogicI might be the best, but logic II might be a good choice too. IIRC, they are all designed to exists on their own, as in they have no practical or even official pre-or co- requesites.

Back in the day when I was in high school and a member of that honor's society thing, as part of a civil service thing we had to spend some time tutoring some elementry level kids. Man that was a pain in the ass, was more of an excercise in babysitting than tutoring.

Aye. Only at the higher levels does it get interesting..

It is quite challenging to explain integrals back-to-back with addition😉

you lost me 😀

<-----that is why he wants to take phil

I know who socrates "so craaaates" was, but that is about it

I flunked Geometry and had to take it over in summer school.

I never took a higher level of math.

I'm an Arts\Languages person. I have a mental block when it comes to math. As I get older I find it easier though.

I work in computers and have not been hurt by my poor math skills, though many of my colleagues give me a hard time about it. 🙁
