I say build it. Would love to see a hatch/wagon version as well.

Of course a FI version with 250 hp or more would be better.

Full story on Autoblog.

You will have to be a kid to fit in the back of that car... I still do not understand the hype for the GT86/FRS. For 25k~28k USD, the performance is not that amazing. :/

While the room in the back seat may not be great, insurance is almost always cheaper for four door cars in this class. So I approve of this.

For the 86, handling. I mean, for the same money you can buy a 323 HP Camaro, so it kind of depends on what you're going after. Right now, the BRZ would be the only sports car I'd consider. The Miata is too small, the Camaro is too big, not super excited by the Mustang, etc. The 86 has the right amount of handling, looks, price, and so on.

Engine is anemic even considering the light weight of the car. Absolutely no low end torque.
Lateral grip is far too low for a car of its weight.
Could use a lower center of gravity...
etc.

Car is overhyped :whiste:

I agree it is over hyped, but what do you expect. besides the miata, the market has been without a car like this for years.

I was watching some review on it and they had a good explanation... we lived in a market without hamburgers for years. then we finally get our hands on one. Its a McDonalds hamburger but because we have gone so long without one, we still want it. it isn't the best burger, but that doesn't matter.

IMHO they should make a turbo version. + 60 hp or so and it would be golden

That's because you're trying to characterize the driving experience of the car with numbers. Everything you noted can be said about the miata, yet it's a widely loved sports car.
:colbert:

The FT86 delivers cyborg level steering feedback. The lower grip might hinder its performance on the track, but it continues the spirit of the AE86 in it's ability to easily kick the back end out around a corner. It's about fun.

No, it's because I'm not giving it a free pass just because it was hyped to the moon. It's easy to keep your illusions when you dismiss any other data as ignorant, isn't it?

Curious, have you driven one? Most people I've talked to said it's kinda slow off the line, but the handling makes it really fun to drive.

No, people aren't giving it a pass because it's hyped, they're giving it a pass because it's an absolute blast to drive.

Again, defining a car by its numbers is like saying the Miata is a piece of shit because it's about as fast as a minivan on paper. But clearly they are worlds different in driving experience.

The Miata gets a lot more respect because it's so proven and so cheap (particularly now that they have been out for so long). I know it's apples/oranges, but getting a nice used MX-5 for $5k and turning your own wrenches for track days is a respectable effort. Paying close to $30k for the BRZ/FRS is just a bit steep.

Oh well, you only live once, if it seems worth it to you then it's cool. I'd be a lot more enthused about it if it were $18-$22kish though.

It actually is. The car can lose it's rear end going 30 mph and be fully controllable. It's a blast to drive. 0-60 isn't that great, but it's faster than high performance cars of the 80's and 90's.

Yes partially. But a brand new Miata costs $23.5-30k, which is around the BRZ's price range. It'd be silly to say a Miata is junk because the Camaro is faster. It's totally an apples/oranges comparison despite miata pulling worse numbers on paper.

With that said, there are certainly many people who prefer the Camaro over the Miata for performance reasons. But at the same time, it's perfectly legitimate for people to consider the Miata a better buy for its handling/fun factor.
