hey guys,

I'm putting this computer together for an employee of my dads (so don't pester me with "Don't build systems for other people"). Anyways, I'm going to go install Windows XP when I realize, I don't have a secondary IDE cable to hook up to the DVD/CD-RW Burner.

Is this normal? Or was I screwed out of a cable?

Thanks,

Ryan

it depends on the brand. my mobo came with 2 ide cables. if the cd/dvd drive is retail, it should come with it.

most motherboards that I've bought have come with the cables, but I've also seen some that didn't... it's not as if they're expensive cables.

Well told :p

when I worked with mainboards (three years ago) the secondary IDE cable was quite often not on the component list. It depends, "cheap" mainboards won't have them to save a dollar from the price. Also, most computers don't need a second IDE cable (as they only have two IDE devices)

I have about 10 IDE cables it feels like, and 6 are in use.
Any computer guy should have loads of IDE cables lying around :p

I think both my Abit NF7's only came with 1 cable though (1 IDE PATA and one floppy)

Every board I've bought has had two cables - but for the cd-rw an older IDE cable is fine (doesn't need to be the ata-66 cable).

I mean really, you must have one lying around somewhere...

Open up one of the office computers and take one - no one uses the cd-rom drives at work anyway!
