The story:

Friend lives in same apartment complex for two years, gets to know all the people in the office. She resigns her lease for Aug 06-July 07 back in Janurary. They like her, so they offer her a job in May, starting in August..they pay her $450 rent each month, and she works 65 hrs over the month for them (~$7/hr) - decent deal for an easy college student job of mostly showing people apartments, and a great deal for the company, because it doesn't really cost them anything..

She has been working for them for a month, they push this on her and other employees - and the rest of them sign it! Keep in mind her original lease was signed before the job offer even came. Yes, Texas is a right to work state, so she can quit at anytime or she could be fired..but then she will have to move, within 7 days..yikes!

I don't understand why if employment was terminated, why they have a problem with her paying the amount specified on the original lease? she obviously is wavering whether to sign it or to quit before signing, because moving is something she definitely doesn't want to do this year, and who knows what the future might bring - they could just remove her position!..would you sign this?

Thats one good reason not to work where you live. I understand not wanting an employee who has been fired to live on site, but if she gets a better job and quits and then some bitchy manager wants her completely out then she is screwed.

If they force her to sign it to keep the job then she should write something into the agreement allowing her to keep the place at a standard rate if she gives proper notice. As long as both parties sign it then it should be good.

when people are fired, they are very unpredictable. they are likely worried about property damage etc.

If I got fired and wanted to do something evil, it would (has) certainly been within the week.
