Hmm... just a guess, but in the picture, that guy on the left looks like he's giving a bun to the hot dog eater, so I'm guessing he had to eat buns too. A hot dog ain't a hot dog without the bun. It's just a weiner. I remember seeing video footage of one of these contests a long time ago, and they dipped the bun in water so it would be more compact, allowing them to eat it in less time.
