I just got my Canon S400 today 🙂 I have no idea what I'm doing, but I've taken a few screw around shots..it really amazes me that I can be looking into a pitch black space, with nothing on the viewfinder, press down the button, and the picture comes out looking like it was taken in the middle of the day. Anyway, since I know yall want some pics:

Fountain shot
Flowers
My baby
Isn't she beautiful?
Cute neighboorhood puppy
On the prowl

Ok, ok, i forgot to include the shots from the dark, heeh:
Living room
Cabinet

i think alot of cams are like that. my s330 certainly did the same and ditto for s30.

try taking a pic of your car outside, though, or a group portrait even under low light... i bet you'll be displeased with the flash coverage

um yah, sorry those pictures were not taken in a pitch black scene. you can clearly see shadows that were caused by either the sun or a light source other than your camera.

flash != awesome except in a few very limited circumstances.

I find it hard to avoid using flash in-doors... do I have any other options?
long exposures.

That works... although I meant to add that I wanted to take pictures with the camera in my hand. Sorry about that.

very few flashes have the ability to light up a room to begin with, and you'll usually just wash out all the shadows from your subjects and lose any sense of depth.

I thought you were trying to say the fountain shot was at night. I was like "NO FVCKING WAY!"

long exposures and still have that level of shadow? or is the moon radiating so much?

long exposures???? you try that w/ a 5yr old in the pic 🙂

but yes, flash sucks. for p&s cameras anyway. a faster lens would work too.

interestingly enough many SLRs can't do the only truely useful thing a flash can do, the fill flash. an accessory flash that keeps some shadow on the subject is better than no picture at all, i suppose.
