Was searching for a solution for a co-worker who has a customer who has a motherboard with only 2 PCI slots and 1 PCI express X1 slot. Didn't think they made video cards for PCIe X1 slots. Apparently they do, learn something new every day. I deal mostly with consumer retail hardware and this is more a solution for business and server environments so I didn't know this even existed.

They come at a premium but they can be useful for computers that need more outputs. Or in GPGPU machines, where one big card is in x16 slot and then the x1 slot can be used to a productivity video card so the interface isn't all laggy.

Yeah. Probably should already known this since I sell computer hardware but like I said I deal mostly with consumer hardware. Help people build gaming rigs and the like.

you can also saw off the very right edge of the 1x slot and slam a 16x card in there. it will operate at 1x speeds.

Really??? I know that cards will run at anything from X1 up to X16 dynamically based on whatever bandwidth is available to them.

I never cared for PowerColor products. Too shoddily built IMO...and why does your college need a video card? Usually they just buy new computers...:p

He works for the mac division of our company ( we have a separate retail outlet and web store that sells mac products and accessories, their store is two stores down from us in the mall I work at though there is only one retail outlet for them where as NCIX has about 8 stores around the country). For some reason he had a customer contact him and it's the customer who needs this card, not my coworker. Don't know why the customer contacted the mac branch of our company and not NCIX, anyway my coworker came to me cause he knows macs and not PCs. This is an old HP small form factor business machine and apparently it only has 1 PCIe X1 slot and 2 PCI slots and nothing else.

I don't much care for powercolor myself (EVGA or XFX for myself though I my own card is a Gigabyte cause we had nothing else in stock) but they are the only one we offer for x1 cards. Also for business use like this it's probably good enough. Most cards nowadays are reference designed anyway so the manufacturer means less and less.

I blame spell check. Fucking thing can't read my mind well enough ;) I really wish I could fix my spelling. Believe it or not it HAS gotten better over the years. It's not like I don't know the difference between college and colleague I certainly don't have problems when reading it just comes out all fucked up when I type. Hmm maybe I can claim some type of gooberment disability.... hmmm... :sneaky:

Some boards even come with 1x and 4x slots that are open at the end to allow cards with more lanes to be inserted. Not sure why you don't see these on more boards, would be handy to have the flexibility to fit longer PCI-E cards in these slots.

Neat. Just a guess but maybe they don't do this to prevent confusing the average consumer? Once it got established as a standard most companies probably didn't want to stray from that. Also maybe the open ended slots cost more to purchase than the closed ones? Can't imagine that being much of a difference though.
