making margaritas:

i had been operating under the assumption that 1 tequila is as good as the next. i decided to try a bottle of hornitos reposado, compared to the jose cuervo gold i normally use.

it's so much better. amazing... tastes soo good. smoooooooth.

only problem is i'm sloshed at 4 in the afternoon. :/

The only tihng good about Cuervo is the marketing. HR is pretty decent... also try Patron (Silver) or Don Julio. It wont make you sick (as fast)

i never got sick on JC...

tbh, i dont get hangovers. at least not off tequila. when i was doing rum punches, i got throwing up trashed, and was still completely fine after about 8 hours.

Patron is decent, Don Julio is really good. I personally wouldn't pay for Patron over 1800, but Don Julio is worth it if you are sipping the Tequila or making really strong margaritas.

My rule of thumb for tequila's is 100% agave - usually gives you decent quality whichever you pick.

Yep, I stick to 1800. Pretty good stuff.

Congrats on learning something everyone else has known for hundreds of years.

Also, Belvedere is the best Vodka. Unless there is something better, then its not.

Bong Vodka.

Comes in a glass shaped like, well... a bong.

Smoothest, more pure vodka I've tasted.
Granted, shit better be considering it's $80. Someone got it for my BIL as a gift, sipped on some and damn. Impressive.
I basically refuse to spend over $30 on vodka, typically sticking to the $20-25/750ml price range, obviously more for larger bottles.
If I feel like wasting money, I'll try something a little more expensive to see if it's really worth it. I always come away with a "nope".

Don Julio is one of the best. Like Johnnie Walker, they have different grades of Tequila you can buy. Much more smooth than most stuff out there.

Depends on what you're doing with the booze. I would agree though that margaritas (especially on the rocks) you need good booze. Doubly so for plain martinis. Any sweet girly drink, use well liquor.

If you're making a tequila sunrise, use the cheapest shit you can buy.

I don't drink tequila much, but I thought Herradura was the best that I'd tried. I don't buy into the Patron hype, it's the Jonnie Walker of tequila -- decent, but more marketing than anything, and there's better to be had for the same or less money.

Patron is way ovepriced: Don Julio at about $10 less a bottle is our favorite for drinking straight.

Not a huge fan of Cabo Wabo or Milagro either. Margaritaville is horrendous.

Stick to 100% Agave and stay away from tequila that has food coloring in it - basically anything that says GOLD on the label.

Other good tequilas under $25/bottle:
El Jimador
1800
Cazadores
Corralejo
Puerto Vallerata
Cuervo Tradicional

Hornitos is one of the best tequilas for making a good margarita.

In the $35 range try:
Don Julio
Herradura
Don Eduardo

BTW a delicious beer margarita recipe I learned this weekend. In a pitcher mix:

4 cans of your preferred beer (lighter beer works better).
1/3 of the minute maid limeaid stuff (in the freezer section).
1-2 cups of tequila depending how strong you want it.

Lime the rim of a glass, salt it, and pour. Yum!!

Why would you ever think that all tequilas are the same...? Did you also assume that all whiskeys, scotches, vodkas, etc., were the same?

considering i dont like whiskeys, (thus far i've had soco and JD... hated both, so yep, same), never had scotches, hated every wine i ever tried (and i've tried like 20-30...every time i go to a relative's house he has another bottle of something different out.) and never had vodka.

i hate beer too. so considering i hate them all, yep, to my mind, they're all pretty similar. (at least in their own categories.)

the only alcoholic drinks i really like are margaritas.

edit: tbh, these arent even true margaritas.

what i make is exact quantities, 1/3 tequila, 1/3 curacao, 1/3 lemon juice.

no salt rim, no sour mix.

but it's so good to go along with a mexican meal.

That's my favorite also, I like the anejo. Tres Generaciones is very good too. I spent most of my life thinking I hated tequila. The problem was the only tequila I had was garbage(Cuervo). I need to explore the different offerings more thoroughly.

jc is only serviceable when you're a poor college student. even then, that was right up there with smirnof for the worst non plastic bottle alcohol award.

Same here. Had a wild night with some Sauza gold and thought I hated tequila.

Had some Tres Generaciones at a friends place and enjoyed sipping it. So smooth.
