FORT BELVOIR, Va. ? The U.S. military's only plant making small-arms ammunition is running at near capacity, 4 million rounds a day, and the United States still is forced to look overseas and to the recreational industry for ammunition for troops in Afghanistan and Iraq and those training to deploy there soon.

4 million rounds! .... A DAY!! .. WHICH IS NOT ENOUGH??

wow 😛

That's about base combat load for a manuever brigage, without having any reserve. We have 17 manuever brigades in Iraq now, probably burning through ammo at a good rate. Even with the huge amount of materiel we had prepositioned in theater, you're probably needing the majority of that production just to keep the guys in Iraq supplied. Then you need to account for needs from other units in hostile areas not in the same theater (Afghanistan, Korea, etc), and the normal training needs for every other unit, and you can see why 4M/day production won't be enough. While I was in 5th Group, the company we had in Kuwait would run through 4m rounds and more in a typical 3-month cycle. Yes, we did a LOT of shooting over there 🙂

Population control at it's finest.

But think of all the jobs with them running 3 shifts.

True, found the source of the Booming and Soaring Economy, good job guys.

Here's some more Fuel for the Booming Economy directly due to the War:

1-13-2004 Hall company meets quick order for Iraq

Reconstruction of potable water stations in Iraq has taken a major step toward reality, thanks in part to a Northeast Georgia-based pump manufacturing company.

In a $2 million deal, Patterson Pump Co. of Toccoa boxed and trucked 92 potable water pumps in early December to Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

Patterson was the only pump manufacturer who could meet the critical, six-week time frame. A letter of contract award was issued Nov. 1

"The individual dedication of every Patterson employee is the major reason we were able to meet this critical deadline for potable water pumps in Iraq," said Huber, whose company has 350 employees.

"Our plant personnel work overtime or on weekends, if necessary, to ensure that customers are served on time," said Huber.

The armorers at work had some difficulty filling the monthly order for .223 ammunition last month from what I hear so our training next week might be limited. They buy milspec .223 stuff from a supplier that apparently also fills military orders which explains that. I buy the cheap Wolf .223 7.62 and 9mm for everything but my German and bolt action guns so I don't have any problems 🙂

whats brass go for by the ton? seems to me like a few guys with some shovels and a pickup truck might have an opprotunity to retire early.

Yeah..Just watch out for the mine fields...<BOOM> early retirement!

Who puts a mine field on a shooting range? 🙂

p.s. You can't synthesize jobs that normally wouldn't exist and hope it makes the economy better...unless you're into growing the deficit 😉
