We bought a mattress from Macy's about 2 months ago with no interest for 12 months.

Bill has been paid both months at amounts over the minimum. (They are asking $125 minimum, we paid $200 both months). Today we get a call from Macy's collections that our account is past due. We noticed its the same number that seemed to call a few times over the week while at work.

We pull up the online statement, it shows both our payments being processed successfully each month, nothing past due, no late fees, everything is fine.

WTF is wrong with Macy's Credit? She even referenced the same acct # that we pulled up just fine online, we only have one acct. Such a nice call to get on New Years morning, thanks Macys!

Store credit is an anachronism, and there's no good reason to use it anymore. It just complicates things needlessly.

Call them up and bitch like crazy. Depending on how long the return period is, you might even threaten to return it over this.

so what did they say when you told them you see everything looks good online?

We called back, it was just an odd call from the start, and it gets stranger from here.

Ok, so our online statement shows Amt Paid for the two months, $200 monthly, but we look closer and see the balance is still the same (Its an fairly expensive mattress - So $400 paid means its still expensive )

Anyway, we call back and she looks at the account. Yes, we paid $400, but both payments were applied to our "normal" account, the acct with no balance. Normal account we ask? She replies that promotional items (i.e. 12 months no interest) are given a new acct (with an acct number were not provided, nor even told exists in the monthly bill). Making online bill payments the standard way ONLY applies those credits to the standard acct, WTF. We looked at the bill we get in the mail, it ONLY references our normal acct number.

So we ended up with an unused standard account with a $400 credit, and our promotional mattress acct with no payments made. The associate transferred the payments to the correct acct and said as far as they knew, the only way for it to be credited correctly is to use Macy's online payment service or to physically mail a check in with the payment coupon. Using our banks online bill pay will only pay the normal acct.

So, in the end everything is fine, annoying nevertheless.

Thats fucked up - but with Macy's I am not suprised. I applied for a credit card there for a discount on something I was buying for my wife. I was declined (first and only time I have ever been decline so I was surprised - but then realized the 90 year old woman trying to use the computer for the second time probably did something wrong) so I just used my debit card.

I got a late payment notice from them some time later. It seems I was 'declined' but given a card with $0 Limit. At the time there was some $10 matinence fee or something like that, which put me over my limit of nothing.

Needless to say they got a less than pleasanst phone call

lol, how they hell do you get a card with a $0 limit? That doesn't even make sense.

So you had a $400 credit on an account with a 0 balance? Why was there a $125 minimum payment for this account with 0 balance? This must happen all the time for people that buy these kind of promotions, right?

That's messed up. I believe they use Citi, the same as HD, and when I used their car for a 12 month thing it worked just fine. However, I did use their online system, so it could be the same as Macy's if I were to use a bank's online bill-pay system.

OP: Watch your credit reports. If they report a late payment that could seriously impact your credit score.

macy's sucks...I have their CC, but if you buy stuff from Macy's, the charges goto the in-store purchase account, if you use it outside the store as a mastercard, the charges goto another account, and you have to pay each of them separately.

Yes there is--free financing for up to 3 years in some cases, discounts, coupons...there's lots of reasons.

I used my Best Buy card to by a $500 camera, and I get interest free payments for 18 months, I got a 10% discount, and double Reward Zone points, which scored me a $25 gift certificate. I don't think Visa would give me any of those things.

Cash would. I don't need another bill to keep track of, and have to worry about making payments every month for a couple of trinkets. It's worth $25+ to not have the hassle of dealing with another bill.

If you think that's bad, try dealing with HSBC. I don't think we go 3 months without them royally screwing something up. i.e. we have all the paperwork that showed that our Dec payment was going to go up due to an increase in the amount that goes toward taxes & insurance. Paid Oct, paid Nov, in December, we find out that we're 2 months behind on our payments - they took October's payment and put it into some sort of account because it was less than the "required payment" - it was the correct amount, but less than December's payment. So, it never got applied to our account. HOURS on the phone straightening it out. (edit: and we were never contacted. When we questioned them on this, "we called the number you have listed a couple of times, but there was no answer." LEAVE A MESSAGE NEXT TIME! I don't call back unfamiliar numbers; I don't have time (we do business on that phone number & frequently have tons of unfamiliar numbers calling us - but most of them leave messages.)

Then there was the time when my wife was paying the mortgage payment a couple days before the due date. Since it was before the due date, they only applied a percentage of the payment toward the mortgage payment, then applied the rest toward the principal. i.e. due date is on the 10th, paid on the 8th. Amount due = $380. $360 goes toward mortgage, $20 toward principal. Then, 15 days later, "you owe a late payment fee because you didn't pay your entire mortgage." Again, hours fighting them. It's like they're playing games to simply collect extra fees from customers who will bend over for them in frustration.

something similar happened to us - but not even with a special no-interest account.

apparently, when you open a card, they open a "debit" account as well so you can use your macy's card at any ATM machine!

our payments were going to that account! I was pissed - search online and you'll see that this is happening ALL the time with Macy's

it's just a way to confuse customersso we incur late fees or lose special financing

you're dealing with the American Financial Services Industry.

and you're expecting honesty ?

that's like expecting a 30 year old sex worker to be herpes-free.

Heh. I actually called Macy's with a similar question. I bought a rather expensive sofa a week ago and then a few days later went and bought a few smaller items. The sofa has 12 months 0% financing. I figured I screwed myself since payments are usually applied to the lowest rate charges first, meaning my $100 in small items would sit and collect interest. Sure enough, there are two account numbers to make payments to; one for furniture and one for everything else. If you ask me it makes a lot of sense but I wonder how well this setup is explained in the account statements.

:\

Once a month, I click on my bank's homepage, I click the saved link for my bill, I type in the amount I want to pay, and hit "submit".

I take it you have had a problem with forgeting to pay things in the past? Seriously, it takes like 30 seconds once a month.
