when my gf's parents bought her a computer 3-4 years ago, a craptastic Compaq, it was non-stop problems and trips to the store for repairs. However, they never bothered saying anything so they just kept having it "fixed" by the "professional" technicians.

Fast forward a couple years... gf lives with me now and I take care of the computer. Goes OK for a while until things start getting funny again. Then I suspect the motherboard or memory of being defective.. so after quite some time of fighting with the machine, we just bring it to the store where the warranty is supposed to be good still. they look at it for a week, and when I go in to check on them, they say the cpu, ram and motherboard are all toast. OK?

so he says if the cost of repairs exceeds the value of the computer, they can either fix the computer (replace with the same crappy 900 duron, 128 ram etc) or give us the equivalent of today's computer! so they give me an HP Pavillion instead (?? anyways) ... much better! xp 2800, 512 ddr, 80gb, cdrw/dvd combo drive, everything i need in a computer pretty much .. integrated video but I don't play games so I don't really care.

I guess I was just surprised they actually followed through on their warranty, nearing the end of it ... the computer wasn't even in my name and they had no problem giving it to me.

PS: the keyboard was actually defective too but I replaced that seperately

oh and the store was futureshop...

free upgrades are good 😀 this one can actually run XP reasonably...

compaq has 3-4yr warranty?????

i dont know about that at all , but most likely its my gfs parents that purchased the 'extra' warranty from the store when they first bought it. usually this is just a waste of money, but actually a wise decision when buying a compaq... lol

never thought id actually make use of something like that and benefit from it !

definitely enjoying ... anyway gotta go deliver some pizzas.. HELLOAAHH!! later 😛

yeah, if a store actually didn't go through their BS, the extended warranty is nice for some folk. But it's such a rarity that it ever happens....

This is actually standard practice by some warranty houses. However, not all warranty houses offer such, and often times multiple warranty houses can service a single retailer, dependent upon state of domicile (in simpler terms, which warranty house covers one's particular purchase varies by which state one lives in, not based on the state where the product is purchased).

A particular warranty entity that offer replacement when cost of repair exceeds the price of a new unit would be American Bankers Insurance, which is based in Florida. Minimal red tape when dealing with a product repair. In contrast, Voyager Service Programs often has a great deal of red tape, and can be very difficult to actually receive a repair or a replacement.

Not certain for Canadian residents, though I imagine some service program entities are international.
