Wow, some people should not have guns.

Linda Maddox, 63, was sleeping in her bedroom with her twin grandsons after their father had gone to work, said Cristal Bermudez Nunez of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Concerned about her safety, Maddox had placed a chair against the bedroom door handle for “extra protection” before going to bed at about 11:45 p.m., Bermudez Nunez said. A loaded .22-caliber revolver sat on the floor next to the mattress.

Just before 1 a.m., sheriff’s deputies say, Maddox heard the chair sliding against the hardwood floor. Believing there was an intruder, Maddox grabbed the gun and fired one shot toward the door.

Seconds later, deputies said, she heard her grandson, Tyler Maddox, screaming. He had been shot once in the upper body, and was taken to a hospital, where was listed in critical but stable condition.

Bermudez Nunez said that Maddox reported that she often places the chair against the door on nights when her son, the boys’ father, works late and she’s home alone with the twins.

Maddox gave no warning before shooting, deputies said, and she told them that the room was pitch black.

Maddox has not been charged in shooting, but detectives are actively investigating and she could face charges later, Bermudez Nunez said.

Blindly firing through the door when you know there's 2 kids around. Brilliant.

One shot, one hit, pitch black, blindly aiming??

Smells like bullshit. The kid probably deserved it.

Yeah, I don't think anyone's going to break into your bedroom lady...

This. Jesus Christ. Gives myself and other responsible gun owners a bad name. I would not have a home defense shotgun/rifle/pistol without a light on it (or at the very least, have a flashlight sitting right next to the gun).

.22 LR is plenty lethal. Pretty sure that 80 years old guy in Long Beach used a .22 to kill that woman who broke into his house.

How the FUCK can you not be charged with a crime here?

I shot my son.

I retardedly used a gun.

I shouldn't own a gun.

I don't even properly store my gun.

I don't know how to deal with an intruder situation.

Folks, another case of mandatory vasectomy.

Why do you hate Murrica, OP? We will only be truly free when every last man, woman, child, and dog is armed with the firearm of their choice and an NRA membership card.

.22LR =/= Shotgun.

She's a terrible gun owner for not visually identifying what she shot at though.

...

and she only shot 1 blast instead of 2, but the general idea is there.

kid would probably be dead if it was a shotgun.

So the two kids were sleeping in the room with her and there was a loaded gun just lying on the floor next to the bed? Yikes

omg this whole time I thought they were in a different room trying to get in.

Tyler was sleeping with his twin brother, Tyrique, in his grandmother's room in the modest five-bedroom house at 6505 Alta Monte Drive, according to Hillsborough County sheriff's officials. About 1 a.m., he got up and tried to leave the room.

Deputies investigated the incident and concluded that Linda Maddox mistook her grandson for a burglar. She is not likely to face charges, officials said.

Tyler Maddox emerged from surgery and remained in critical but stable condition late Tuesday morning, the Sheriff's Office said.

He and his brother live at the home with their father, Reginald Maddox, 46, a postal worker, records indicate.

Wow, guns are dangerous, what isn't when used carelessly?

She should join the NRA and get some safety training. How does anybody think firing a gun in the dark is going to work out well? Still it isn't clear that a crime was committed or jail time serves any purpose.
