WoW: Shadra the venom queen

I, a 46 alliance hunter, was killing trolls in the Hinterlands. I ended up in the walled off section of troll temples. I was enjoying killing the somewhat large silver spiders there (quite a nice shock when their bodies contain two mini spiders). Lo and behold, I spot an absolutely huge red spider there. And I mean huge. It was about as tall as a giant, about 4 times as tall as my night elf self, with the usual spider proportions (i.e. bigger than I was on the screen from about 200 yards). It was a level 55 elite.

Needless to say I avoided it. However, a level 60 warlock came by to do a quest turn in there, and decided to fight it. The thing hits for 600, poisons for 77/sec and crits for over 900, against a level 60 warlock. I had been fighting a spider nearby when he did this, so after it killed him (took less than 20 seconds), it came over to me and killed me in about 3 seconds.

We did some research and found that there is a horde quest to kill this monstrosity. Has anyone done this quest? The reward seems to be just exp, according to the research we did. Anyone have first hand experience with this behemoth?

yes, the reward is fatty xp. The reason why it was spawned there sometimes is because people try to solo it or underestimate the spider. You have to take a scroll and spawn it, once it's spawn you lose the scroll and you have to abandon the quest and get it scroll again (from a town by Orgrimmar).

I did it a while back in the low 50s and don't recall if there was a reward or not. If there was, I don't think it was a good shaman helm, as I'm still wearing the same high bergg helm I was wearing since well before doing the quest. You might be thinking of the quest for the helm of exile, which starts in the area the spider is in by talking to a non-kos troll there. I think it's ~270ac 11agi 18int/spirit mail, requires a trip to the sunken temple in swamp of sorrows. The two quests are unrelated.

If you want an epic drop, you should visit the sunken temple often.

Of the 3 times I went, the epic shied (wall of dead?) dropped twice. off the baby dragon looking whelp.

it's all luck of the draw. I've always got crappy loots in temple (except for the boss drops)

What who? Dragons?

I ask because I am currently attempting to complete the dragonscale leatherworking quest. This is an unbelievably frustrating quest. I am level 47 and am able to kill 44 elite dragons and below. I have killed easily 100 of the various dragonkin, and only one dragon kin, a whelp, dropped a scale when I skinned it. I need 10 of them, in addition to about 50 scorpid scales that I must turn into scorpid gear.

So do these dragons in the sunken temple, for which I admit I am probably too low, skin worn dragonscales at a higher %? I just don't get how anyone would want to do dragonscale with the absurdly low drop percentage and the fact that pretty much the only things that drop the scales you will actually need later are elites. Oh and the fact that the items have limited usefulness.

Torpid,

I'm not a leatherworker, and haven't done a lot of killing of the dragonkin. However, I did notice that the guy I normally group with (a leatherworker), never got any dragonscales of any type from the ones in Dustwallow Marsh. However, when we were in the Badlands doing the Broken Alliances quest which takes you to the Eastern end in a valley filled with dragons he was getting worn dragonscales fairly regularly. Hope that helps.

What does that allakhazam link say? (can't visit it due to proxy restrictions). I have searched both it and thottbot to determine a good place to get scales. There doesn't appear to be one. The closest was sprite dragons in feralas. I killed a few and no luck. They are incredibly hard to find so that didn't seem like a good option.

Thanks for the tip re: badlands. Thottbot had a lot of posts when I checked last night indicating that some people had success there but many had the same problems, whereas some had success in dustwallow. I will give it a try, though. I should note that I did in fact get a scale off the ones in dustwallow so I know it is at least theoretically possible.

I wonder what the drop rates are for other branches of leatherworking and their related quests. The idea that I must accrue 30 worn scales to make a single item when the drop rates are unbelievably low is somewhat disturbing and reminds me a lot of crap quests from other MMORPGs.
