wow prison literally starved this guy

Any instance of something like this happening in his jails?

no.
but he didnt say that.
He said the sherrif would be proud.
And he probbaly would. Somebody thats even more ruthless and cold hearted might get his respect or admiration. Or at least get him thinking.

Wow, what a sad story of someone with a disease (schizophrenia) with deep biological roots, who was utterly failed by the system. From the outset, they regarded him as an animal and treated him as such, which turned him into that very thing, which in turn only further reinforced their perception.

I hope there's some justice in all of this. I realize the jail hasn't provided its side of the story but so far this side sounds pretty credible.

Great - more city/county dollars down the drain because some retarded fuck-ups that do a piss-poor job aren't going to be held accountable.

I can't get over people literally watched him starve to death. I realize he was a pain in the ass and difficult to deal with but nobody thought it was odd withholding food? Nobody though the guy smearing feces around might need some help? All I can think is this is an example how you are not safe in a crowd because everyone thinks someone else did something.

Greetings all,

It is sad to read such a thing happening in the wealthiest country in the history of the world. It is past time to overhaul our criminal justice system so that stories like this are a thing of the past and not occurring any longer.

"The investigative reports of his death suggest gaps and failures within the state's mental health system prevented Mr. Mitchell from receiving the inpatient care he needed,"

"gaps"....

If the outside wall of his cell was missing, they'd probably call it a gap.

While this is also true, I think the money is a minor issue in comparison to the death of a human being. If you think money is more important than life then I honestly feel you're a sociopath.

Sorry, just like how most people value animals, I don't feel there is much value in an insignificant human.

Those terms are not entirely precise in the world of psychology.

Anyway, the state of treatment of people in our jails and prisons, particularly with serious mental illness (which is a very high number - ~20% of inmates and far exceeding state hospital beds) is exceedingly appalling. It is a massive human rights problem right under our noses, but it involves people we'd rather not think about.

Deinstitutionalization of treatment for the mentally ill has replaced major human rights violations with worse human rights violations.

No, psychopath is when you ENJOY ending life.
Sociopath is when you simply dont care.

Well, neither term is in the DSMIV. Both loosely fall under Anti-Social Personality Disorder. If you Google around, you'll discover that some psychologists think there is no difference between the two, while others think there is a difference, but every person who thinks that differentiates the two with a different set of criteria. Bottom line is there isn't much difference, if any.

Who gets to determine who is an "insignificant human?" You?

Since schizophrenia is absolutely a neuro-chemical condition over which the sufferer has no control, not even the sound judgment to take medication, then your logic suggests that all sorts of people are suddenly insignificant, including, for example, people with Alzheimer's Disease.

We've upgraded to 5.

Still no mention of psychopathy and sociopathy though 🙂
