Wow! PoE is powerful

Foscam outdoor PoE camera connected to a Trendnet PoE switch. Ethernet connection was not really protected from the elements. Got a heavy rain. Noticed camera image was being intermittent. Then quit.

When it stopped raining I went to check. Noticed a black smudge on the plug. Tested the switch port. Still OK. Did end to end test on cable. OK. Took down camera and checked Ethernet socket.

One contact wire was vaporized! Poof! Gone! Guess the Trendnet can supply some current.

Replacement camera arrives tomorrow. I will look into cutting off the burnt socket and putting a new one on. It will be a backup camera. And most importantly the new camera will have a rain protected Ethernet connection!

802.3at PoE can provide up to 30 watts. I'm sure it has enough energy to cook something. 😀
