Cliffs:
jlee buys an "STi" intercooler
jlee installs an "STi" intercooler
jlee discovers it doesn't fit quite right, but attributes it due to poorly fitting aftermarket silicone hoses
jlee discovers that an OEM subaru hose doesn't fix the problem
jlee is told it's actually a WRX intercooler
jlee becomes angrypanda

C'mon...really? WTF. Now to spend another $250...and track someone down.

i'd give the seller the benefit of the doubt, at least at first...they are very similar intercoolers...might just be an honest mistake

Time to utilize some police power, I know I would.

Unfortunately it's a civil matter at this point.

Someone done fucked up somewhere...may have been the guy he bought it from, but at some point someone painted 'STi' on a WRX intercooler. I sent him a PM to see if he could shed some light on it..

it's like a type R or VTEC sticker, makes it go faster lol

srsly though, that sucks dude...i'd be figuring out a way to make it fit and tell the guy that if he wants to maintain good feedback that he should give you a few bucks back for your troubles

Oh it fits...sort of. However, I have a bigger engine and bigger turbo than what the WRX intercooler is designed for. I need the additional capability of the STi intercooler.

Get your refund and FMIC ftw?

Also, this was more for the old air-cooled engines, but black paint DOES help with lowering temperatures when compared to bare or polished surfaces. Though to be clear it was a matter of several degrees on an air cooled engine, in this case it was more likely for looks or the technical advantage.

Black paint would only insulate

No, I think if you were to do the math of the thermal transfer you would find that the increase in thermal emissivity would offset the very small increase in overall thermal conductivity.

EDIT: Depends on the temperature of the surroundings.

Woah that's some weird piping on a intercooler. Guess they had to do that to make it fit on top of the engine.

Man, that intercooler looks like someone drove through a rain of gravel. I don't think I would have bought it looking like that.

And if you go get another one, you need one from model ranges 05-07. 04 STI's were a weird bunch.

What's the difference other than the y-pipe?

There may not be, but it's also been awhile since I've looked into it. I was under the impression it was slightly smaller, but I'm probably way off there.

See the edit above re: the condition. I think the IC's are the same, but the Y-pipe and corresponding elbow is different.

Doesn't look too bad in the ad, but curiously the damage doesn't really seem to be similar either. Nor is there a logo in the ad. Another thing if you notice is that in the ad, both intercoolers are the same size. May have been an 05 wrx intercooler, but definitely not an STI.

It's very revealing that the newbie seller with no feedback owns an '02 WRX and sold you an intercooler from the same vehicle and year...

Indeed. Weird thing is, though, that there is 'STi' faintly visible under the paint. I am waiting for a PM back from him.

Seller could be shady, but I would give him the benefit of the doubt. If he/she has an -02 WRX, maybe they bought the 'STI' intercooler and did not realize it was supposed to be different from his WRX intercooler. He/she may be reselling it and is not aware that it was incorrectly labeled.

Seller posted a followup to that thread and sounds on the up and up. Honest mistake.

It's more than a misunderstanding..it was listed specifically as an 05 STi intercooler and it's clearly not.

He sent me his phone # so hopefully we can work something out. Fortunately I haven't been beating on the car too hard because it is running a tune for a larger intercooler, so bad stuff could have happened.
