Wow.. people are oblivious

JEDI

Lifer
i was getting coffee. it was packed. all the talbes were taken.

apparently, some guy sitting in the corner had a laptop. he left it to goto the bathroom. when he came back, the laptop was gone.

being in the corner, there were 3 tables around him (left, right, diagonal). noone on those 3 tables saw anybody walk past them, much less unplug a laptop, close it, and walk away w/it.

One was a dad and kid, another was an elderly couple and the last table were middle aged women.

When i left, the guy and the manager were reviewing the survalence tape. but being in the corner, he was in a blind spot. so they were reviewing people that left the store.

Are you oblivious to your surroundings?

Lesson learned from this, trust no one. Some people think eveything should belong to them, that includes your stuff. Don't make it easy for them to just take it.

Where do you live where people apparently are naive enough to not guard their stuff like a dog guards his food?

think nothing of it, i worked in sales at compusa and ran into a lot of people that thought they had come to circuit city. or they have no idea what brand of computer they are buying, or one guy didn't know whether his printer used a USB or parallel connection (keep in mind he would physically unplug and plug it in to different computers, and i showed him what the difference was... he still didn't know)

People who leave laptops laying around in restaurants = retarded

Might as well just leave a pile of cash on the table and then wonder why it disappears.

nah, it could happen to anyone...

people learn the hard way how not to give anyone the benefit of the doubt. sucks that the guy who got his laptop stolen is going to become a bitter and angry cynic who probably is two steps closer to the once impossible-to-conceive act of stealing someone else's property

we can't suffer alone, you know?

Doesn't seem that unusual to me. Those people really had no reason to keep track of someone else's stuff on another table. And a place like a coffee shop usually has people walking around everywhere.

A guy I knew in college used to do this. He'd put a suit on in the morning, then go to a business complex. He'd walk right into a room full of cubicles, look for an empty cubicle with a laptop in it, throw the laptop in his satchel and walk out. He ended up getting a bunch of laptops and palm pilots. He eventually got what was coming from him when I turned him in to local authorites.

Being from NYC, being oblivious is not an option, or at least that was the case when I was a kid. Guy was an idiot for leaving a laptop out like that.

Yes, and it looks like you are, too. I don't care if you were in line or not. 😉

Actually, I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often. I'm even more surprised we haven't had any big domestic terrorist attacks since 9/11.

I'm nervous when I park my car to come to the office every day.....and my work has zoned parking closest to my office in a church parking lot. We're only a block from the ghetto here.

All of you guys are bashing on the guy, but I can understand where he comes from. He unpacked everything and probably plugged it in. It's a bit of a pain to put it all back in the bag as if he's leaving just so he can make a quick run to the bathroom.

its gonna be an even bigger pain to throw down all that cash for a new laptop

the next big story, "a company laptop was stolen and now the identities of thousands of people are at risk"

especially because he was in a corner, people should've noticed. You have to walk by the surrounding tables, twice... the thief was ballsy... or looked like the owner enough to casually walk over and swipe it.

Most people don't care or don't pay attention to their surroundings. They are busy having a conversation, they probably didnt even take a good look at what the real owner looked liked. Also if they did notice they are probably to afraid to do something. Also they could have thought oh someone else will say something; they wait for others to react.

Its funny but I leave my laptop alone at my school library all the time. I once left it for about two hours and it was still there. I'm not the only one either. I actually wanted to do a social experiment on how many people at the library would notice if someone came by and took the laptop...

I would have done the same thing as the guy. I've done it before actually, in places more likely to have it get stolen than a starbucks. I've left my laptop plugged in in the student union while I go to get coffee or food.
