I'm not trying to do anything other than help.

I think you are a dick.

He will get help when he is ready.

Agreed. If WoW didn't get him first, it would've been something else.

I've been a long time WoW player and when WoW was out for a year, I had over 120 days played... note that means I averaged about 8 hours played every day. I don't blame this on WoW, I blame it on myself, although I don't regret it one bit. I'd much rather play WoW and not hang out with people then get drunk and sexify nasty girls because of beer goggles during college :p.

heh, whatever gets you through the day man.

You do realize you can play WoW, drink, hang out, and sexify girls as well? Theyre not mututally exclusive.

I dunno how some people can play that damn game so much. I didnt get to lvl 60 till after BC came out. Even then, I only had the endurance to make it to lvl 61. I just get bored of it after a while....

The real dick and loser is your friend. He committed a fraud to support his gaming addiction.

Eh well, I shouldn't make it seem like WoW directly kept me from those things. I purposely steered clear of them. The only thing I quit because of WoW was karate, but I probably would've ended up quitting for something else anyway :p. Before WoW, I used to play MahJongg quite a lot and was pretty decent at it.

Although I have used discussions of leveling WoW to blow off girls wanting a ride on the love train :p. But I think most people here would've talked about anything to miss that train.

I have a friend who does close to the same thing with runescape. Sells the accounts for lots of money. A couple of months later does the forgot password thing with the secret question. Get the account back because they stopped playing then sells it agine.

I wouldn't mess with this, I've tried to help a friend and he seriously went off on me and a few other friends because its like a drug, they will go CRAZY if they get cut off cold turkey.

Anyways, if you could get his account banned by Blizzard that'd be a lot better than trying to do anything yourself, trust me, that's a mistake.
We're still friends but I don't care if he ruins his life anymore, there's only so many times you can offer help or try to help someone before you just have to stop.
Reminds me of the drowning guy saying god will save him to the boats that keep passing by...

Yea, I'm like your friend, only in Runescape. I don't do the accout scams or any of that crap, just plain ole addicted.

I Quit back in nov06 but came back again last 2months.

Reading this convinced me to quit again, thanks - I needed the kick in the arse.

As for helping your friend, getting his account banned will probably do the trick. Until he is sick of playing\ready to quit then it will be quite a fight to get him to stop. I really wish i had someone to intervention me from RS =\.

Nah, I put logic before emotions... unfortunately, man's greatest folly is it relies on emotions far too much.

I got pissed off when people tried to stop making me play the game, because they didn't like that I didn't go out anywhere or do anything. Yet they didn't realize that I didn't want to go out anywhere or do anything and I was most certainly not in a "life slump." If only most people realized how annoying they were and selfish that they expected me to spend my time with them. My time, my choice... you don't like it, f' off. Hmm maybe this is why I hate controlling people so much?

Best part is, I got some of them to play and now they play more than me .

Agreed. Same way I feel about the freaking morons that always try to make you dance. I freaking hate dancing but they can't seem to understand it and are always trying to drag me out onto the floor.

What makes you say that?

When he has WoW, he plays every second of every day. When he doesn't, he is much more active.

The difference between an emotional and physical addiction. The root cause of a physical addiction is the substance. It's chemical. The root cause of an emotional addiction is the person. They are the piece that is broken. Lack of responsibility, hate their own life, etc.

Yeah, and I am pretty sure it is very common all you have to do is read up on all the sales of virtual items from dozens of games on ebay and the ten's of thousands of scam chargebacks that created over the last decade. Ebay banned the sale of virtual items about 4 months ago...

Enlist him in the army, pack a bag for him, take a trip, drop him off and tell him to have fun at boot camp.

I don't think you're addicted really or can compare when you consider what happened to my friend, I was addicted to games at the same time as he was, in fact we played together a lot.
But the reason we tried to force him to quit was...

1. he dropped out
2. he quit working
3. he went from smoking weed (which I don't like but I didn't ever care cause its not my body) to smoking crack
4. his life goal became to be like "sanchez" the local dealer down the street and deal crack

So we felt it justified to try and get him to quit, now he's still living at home smoking crack and weed all day.

The sad thing? His mom is the one who enables his addictions, pays for his WoW and gives him money for drugs. He was smart too, had his CCNA straight out of HS and could have had his CCNP - sure would beat playing MMOs all day and smoking crack with money you leech off your mom I'd think.

Whenever I call him to catch up, his stories usually consist of banging crack whores.

Oh well man, there are people who do need intervention because you can get caught up being a lazy ass, I've been caught up in MMOs myself and it took some real tough love to break the cycle.

Now I just use my friends who went no where for motivation.

This may be the funniest post I have ever read on AnandTech.

I smoke weed and play WoW btw, and believe me, there is no correlation between marijuana, WoW, and crack.

I didn't really say there was a general correlation?

My friend quit his job and school to play WoW, and then pursued other stuff with his new found free time - namely crack.

I don't really see what's funny, I'm telling a story which I didn't try to relate to anyone else's story, I am just saying why we tried to intervene and help him.

I don't mean to belittle your post...or your life problems. But if you look at the post through my eyes, or someone else who doesn't know you at all, you might find it pretty hilarious.

I would like to reiterate though...that there are leaps and bounds between marijuana and crack.

You sure there isn't a correlation between addictions whether they be on light drugs, hard drugs, MMOs, and even food? I've been under the impression that most crack addicts started with lighter drugs and then moved onto harder drugs.
