I have the following setup:

Athlon Duron 1.2 Ghz
512 Mb
9600XT card

Is this possible to run WOW at a playable speed or do I need to buy a new system?

If you turned the resolution and details down It should run ok.
No need to upgrade everything, 512mb more memory and an AthlonXP 2000+ or so would give your system a nice boost.

Just the memory as stated on the www.worldofwarcraft.com site. This game is just a memory hog that doesn't need anything else. Hell, you could run the game fine on a duron 800 with a 9200se and 1gig of ram.

Yep, you shouldn't have any problems at all.

Like Mareg said though, it is a memory hog.

1GB seems to be the sweet spot.

There's some extra RAM lying around so we can get may be up to 768 Mb. I don't want to buy RAM because it's the old SDRAM.

What's a good resolution to run it at? 1024 x 768? 800x600?

I have some experience with a 512ram computer running the game. The thing is, this game will usually take about 300meg of ram (not in big towns) and will go as high as 400 on some occasions. So if you say you can upgrade to 768 mo, I think you will be attaining the sweet spot Replicator was talking about.
(I presumed your ram usage when no apps are running should be around 150 mo)

It will use a certain percentage of whatever's available; about 75%. On my system with 1gb ram, it can use 500+.

it runs fine on my machine with a lesser vid card (8500)

i DO have 1GB of RAM, and from what i have heard that will give the biggest benefit

I ran the game at 1024 x 768 on my son's computer and everything was fine except for the AH area in IF.

Athlon Duron 900 Mhz
512 Mb
9600 Pro card

To the OP.

I run it at work on a faster cpu, but less ram and video. It's playable when soloing, but really tough in major cities like Orgrimmar. You'll probably see similar problems, and having a gig of ram should help there. Faster CPU wouldn't hurt, but isn't a necessity. The vid card should be fine.
