I haven't seen an actual gameplay impressions thread yet.
I only got a couple of rounds in late last night but walked away unimpressed. What's with the fact that a single shot from a pistol from a distance will knock down a barrel? That's crazy. I also got shot through walls with pistols. Otherwise it's the same game. I guess I was a lucky guy as I did at least get it to run, lots of bugs/problems reported on the steam forums.

It is definately a change to the physics model as I've staked out that same corner of dust plenty of times in 1.6, ducking behind the wall to reload and have never gotten shot with any gun, let alone the DE.

I believe it's the change of map, remember in de_dust there's a T section in the indoor house thing where you rush in as a terrorist you turn left and there's a box in the middle of the hall that a lot of campers like to duck behind. nothing can shoot through that box because it has another box inside it. if they remove some inner object, and that place will no longer be safe.

The spot I'm talking about I'm playing a CT, and I duck behind the corner on the left as you rush from the CT spawn point through the first opening. Nice place to wait to see what comes through the 'house' heading to the double doors, as well as what comes up the ramp from the passage under the bridge.

Much of the physics system is disabled in CS:S to save bandwidth during online play. Thats why large objects like the barrel behave unrealistically...

That doesn't seem to make a lot of sense, you'd think they'd wanna BETA that too.

I hope they don't go overboard with their physics in HL2 also... thinking it'll seem great.

Maybe if it was a really light barrel, ah whatever.

How long until cheaters ruin CS:S too? Or have they already?

played a bit more, its pretty darn buggy

physics indeed do not flip a barrel if you shoot it from too far away. Still is crazy that a drum will flip from a pistol shot.

It's same old CS with new eye candy. Guess I was expecting more and don't know why... <sigh>

I cant belive u guys dont like it, its bascically the perfect game. Comming from a serious hard core CS player, CSS is everything I could possibly want it to be. Better graphics, better sound, new physics, and classic CS gameplay. Its perfect, I wouldnt want anything to change.

Where did you hear that most of the physics is disabled to save bandwidth? I heard most of the physics is computed client side so there is little to no hit to the bandwidth...

Pretty much. I love it too.

The only thing that REALLY pisses me off is the pause bug. Seems any player can pause the entire server. You get 2 fps and lag like hell until someone unpauses the game. They really should fix that.

im sure they will update the beta with in a few days (I hope)

A LOT of people are complaining about low FPS in-game even with higher end system.
I myself have a

p4 2.8 intel (Dell)
9800pro
512 DDR pc2700 RAM

Stress test gave me an average of 63.something FPS but in game turns out to be 25-50 fps
If I was alone (my own server) I got 80-100fps

I just turned v-sync to always on instead of application preference but that shoudn't make much difference.

The feel of the game seems different, but I seem to be lagging a bit (like video lag) especially when people are shooting at me (aka the tunnel).

I don't like it, graphics arent that great, they need to work on the textures. Plus when u look at objects when they are far away they look blurry and crappy. The physics are kinda cool, esp when a buy flys in the air after being killed with a grendade. plus the flash bag effect is awesome.

THe beta is definately not worth the $ if u dont have CZ

I think a lot of the shooting problems right now are due to lag. There is quite a bit of lag in this game as of now, on any server. The lag does weird things. It's funny because I can shoot the wall next to someone, and get headshots, but I can't when I'm aiming straight at them. I even tried it with a friend. He stood still, and I shot him from a short distance with an AK, and no hit.

I watched a friend of mine playing (I played CS for maybe 2 years starting about 4 years ago) and it really didn't look like anything special. CS gameplay is good but there's plenty of room for improvement. The graphics really didn't impress me at all though. My biggest gripe with CS-type games is that how well you know a map has a lot more to do with your score then actual skill. Hopefully someday we'll have randomly generated 3D worlds to play in :).

That's true, but that's half the fun. Only when you really know a map can you use effective strategies, set up some nice plays. For a clan, coordination and timing are infinitely important, and you can only have that if everyone knows every inch of the map. I've never been in a real clan, but I remember about a year or two ago when I played CS a lot, I knew every single crate, wall, corner, camp spot by heart in de_dust and de_aztec. If you wanted to know what the texture looked like in any specific spot on the map, I could tell you. It's because people know these maps so well that some new players always accuse people of cheating. The truth is, though, that the good players know exactly where an enemy will be under what circumstances, and at what time, so shooting someone through a wall isn't uncommon.

Is this a legal beta? Is it one of those special deals where you had to buy CS Condition Crap? I'd like to download it and give it a run through.

Yes, you need to either own CS Condition Zero or have the ATI HL2 Voucher. Don't bother, HL2 should be coming out in like a month anyway.

You have to turn on ansio. It will look better if you do. -- Performance is more important on a competitive online game tho...
