tell him to call esperian/equifax/transunion (i found esperian to be the more painless though) to issue a fraud alert under his name.

not really. Banks are responsible for preventing this from happening, which is why the customer most likely won't be held financially accountable. By law.

It isn't the customer's fault that it's cheaper for banks to pay out lost funds than it is to prevent the loss from occurring.

Just curious, how exactly do you propose that banks prevent this from happening?


If I decide to open a bank, I'll think about it. In the mean time it isn't my problem, but if banks cannot operate on the internet and protect depositors assets, then they shouldn't be on the internet.

Which is why there are laws that protect consumers from bank's unsafe practices.

 
Even my senior citizen-aged mother knows not to respond to phishing schemes. You figure a 22 yr old would be hip to the internet, lol. 😛
