Wow my 9800pro flashed to 9800xt is running at 78C?

That is damn hot. I just flashed my 9800pro 256mb to a XT. I'm using a VGA silencer with AS5.

Temps:
Proc: 34
System: 33
Vidcard: 78

This isn't normal is it?

btw does anyone have the bios for a built by ATI 9800Pro 256mb, Hynix 2.5 mem? I can't find it anywhere.

edit: ok now the temperature is jumping from 20C to 78C.. wtf?

with an 9800 pro with a R360 gpu and an XT bios. you can with ATI tool I belive and in the overdrive tab?

so theres a thermostat in the 9800pro but ATI doesnt give you access to it? o_0
or do you mean some 9800pro's are really 9800XT chips, crippled in BIOS for marketing/production/some minor defect reasons?

you can with ATI tool I belive and in the overdrive tab? - this with or without the modding shiz? fwiw I'm running the Omega driver based on 4.6

The latter. Rather, I believe ATI *only* makes "9800XT" (R360) cores nowadays, since they don't cost much (if any) more than the R350 did, and it would be pretty dumb to maintain two separate production lines for essentially the same thing. So a lot of recently-produced 9800Pro cards actually have 9800XT cores. If the card also has 256MB of RAM, and will run at 9800XT speeds, it basically is a 9800XT minus the BIOS.

You need to flash the card to a 9800XT BIOS to access the Overdrive feature and temperature monitoring.

And no, 78C IS NOT NORMAL.

I've heard it is for a 9800XT
it is

mine runs UP TO 80C (a little lower with recently improved case ventillation) - still stock HS. The HS gets VERY warm to the touch but the PCB is still (relatively) cool.

i believe the reviews mentioned this AND if you look at OverDrive, 80c is just barely into the "red". 😉

Matthias99 has it right.

You can read ALL about it here (more than you probably want to know)
Now, what is interesting is the new batches of 256MB Radeon 9800 Pro graphics cards are actually Radeon 9800XT cards! There is virtually no difference between the two cards, except for the BIOS.

The 256MB Radeon 9800 Pro's BIOS restricts the card to its official clock speeds of 380MHz core and 350MHz memory. It also disables the OVERDRIVE and thermal diode features of the 9800XT.

But if you reflash the 256MB Radeon 9800 Pro with a Radeon 9800XT's BIOS, you unlock its hidden features and the card automatically

My XT (real one, not flashed) runs hot as well. I saw 68 degrees regularly and the backside's RAM was very hot to the touch. Tried some AS5 on it but things stayed pretty much the same. Just a hot card I guess.

78C is not low by any means... but it's not like way out of the ordinary
some of the newer generation cards (6800) runs hot as hell by default

i'm running exactly the same setup - from the same hot deal no doubt.
and my temp runs from 70-78 as reported by ati tool.
but it is stable and no artifacts. and faster than the 9800pro.
nice setup.

Upgrade your HSF on your card and you'll be good! I just got my RAMsinks and VGA silencer.

we're both using the arctic cooling vga silencer already, no ram sinks yet in my case.
still getting the temps quoted but stable.

Normal would be running it as stock cause even the 9800pro runs hot and the RAM chips vary on them so you may have a slower ns on that card

As 1 who has vested interest with ATI please do not RMA the card if it no longer works !
TIA

Don't worry, we did our research THOROUGHLY - it IS the ati xt with the ati 9800Pro-256 BIOS . . .

. . . we just re addressed the IMbalance. 😉

I ran at 66-69 before I installed my VGA siliencer. Once I installed it, it dropped down to 60-61. (9800Pro 256meg softmod to 9800XT)
