Hi all,
this is more of a post than a question, but it's an interesting read...
I am currently building system for my folks that's a clone of my own, except theirs has a modem (Creative Modemblaster v.90). I initially picked that brand because it was a) cheap, b) a recognizable brand, which I thought meant there would be some type of QA.
Anyway... I was scratching my head for weeks on end because I couldn't get their system to boot up. (A VERY frustrating feature--or lack thereof--of the ECS k7s5a mobo is there's NO error beeps on hardware problems. WTF!!!) Maybe on two out of 25-30 repeat boots was I even able to POST and see a bios setup option. However, on one boot, I heard a "zap", and my folk's power supply died on the spot. !!!
So, not even thinking that the modem was the culprit (it was plugged in throughout the setup process, with mixed results), I decided to progressively transplant each component into my own system (to make sure it wasn't fried by the power supply somehow). When I plugged in the modem into my motherboard, ZAP AGAIN!!!! 2 power supplies killed by one modem!
I didn't even realize that a modem could kill power supplies... Live and learn...
Curiously, how on earth is that possible???
Thanks for reading,
karl
