theplainfad, what can I do for you? Ask me your questions. Obviously you feel that because I own a Mac, I must represent Apple and take responsibility for their silly ads bashing Windows. So, ask away. What would you like to know buddy? :)

These Mac/PC threads crack me up :D It's like talking religion or politics...people lose logic and go all emotional. I love Macs - but I love my Vista Media Center too. I don't really understand why people get all up in arms about it. I use a variety of systems and they all have their individual strengths and weaknesses. It's the same with gaming consoles, some PS3 or 360 gamers will fight you tooth and nail...all it really boils down to is what games you want to play, and if you want different games, just get both. Eh...

Also Gaido? ;)

Simple yes/no question:

Do you agree that the premise on which the latest anti-Vista commercials are based is complete BS and FUD?

Of course they're BS. I'm not defending the Mac or Windows platforms, I just thought it was funny that Microsoft put "I'm a PC" kiosks right in front of the Apple store. Vista had a rough start, but it works fine now. I'm very happy with my Vista Media Center. Like I said earlier, advertising isn't about the truth, it's about getting people to buy stuff. Buying Crest toothpaste to make your teeth white isn't going to land you a hot girl, but it doesn't stop them from advertising. I don't know how we got on this topic anyway, I never said Vista was bad...

I've always found it funny how offended people get by Apple's advertising. Either you have a normal reaction and find it cute in a "haha" way or you fly off the deep end and have to post your angry feelings on a forum. Anti-Apple people are worse than Apple fanboys :D

I'm simply giving you the reason why Apple's ads offend me. I'm not a big fan of dishonest advertising regardless of source, and even you agree they are misleading (at best).

Almost all advertising is misleading it seems like...I don't think Apple's alone in that regard. Cars, food, electronics, you name it. It won't make you run faster or jump higher. Apple is just poking fun at the situation and worldview that people have regarding computers. Like the Mac/Vista "beancounter" ads...Microsoft spent $300 million in that advertising campaign. Yes, it's misleading because Vista is a pretty stable product nowadays, especially on a fast, powerful and compatible computer. But people still have problems with Windows, there are driver conflicts, viruses, spyware, etc. Macs "just work" compared to that and that is what Apple is capitalizing on, that's all. Run of the mill advertising.

I'd rather Apple jsut advertise its own products and step away from bashing msft. Those mac/pc commericials come of as incredibly smug and condescending.

I like my macbook for casual use, chilling on the sofa or whatever, but for actual WORK, sorry dude I'll take my xp pro any day.

2 finger scroll is beyond godly though

I also paid 1200 shipped for this 1600 macbook new, so that's pretty much the only way I'm willing to buy mac products now.

Yeah, but how else is Apple going to convince people to buy their systems without preying on the issues that people experience with the competitor's product? It's David vs. Goliath - Apple only has like a 10% marketshare and are really expensive - it costs $1300 for a new 13" laptop and $2000 for a 15" laptop. You can get a basic 15" laptop from Dell for like $499, but you can't get a basic 15" Mac laptop for around that price. Switching to Mac is a hassle for most people - they have to find replacement software since their current Windows software won't work without a Virtual Machine product, which is beyond the scope of the average user, it's expensive, and they have to a learn a new, unfamiliar.

So I completely understand their advertisements and why they take that approach. "Macs are cool and nice" isn't really a good reason for your average PC user to change, but "Macs are more stable than Windows, plus cool and nice" is a much more incentivizing reason because people identify with that - "Yeah, I have problems with my Windows computer all the time!". It's just marketing. Yeah I think they're smug too, but they're also pretty funny sometimes. And in the end, it's just a dumb TV commercial.

I can't wait to try the new multi-touch trackpads they have...multi-finger swipes for navigating the Internet, showing all the windows open, pinching to zoom in on photos, twisting to rotating photos, etc. Genius! :D

As far as work goes, it just depends on what apps you use. If it's something like Adobe software, you can use it on either platform - it's just a matter of preferences. But most business apps that I use are Windows-only.

I was just looking at the new one on Engadget:

http://www.engadget.com/2008/1...capable-of-this-whole/

Honestly, for my basic computer needs I'd love to have one. I have an MSI Wind netbook right now, but it's just...small. I've played with the Air in person and it's a very neat device...wonderful screen, great little chiclet keys, more than powerful enough for basic tasks. Plus with the new Nvidia chip, it can drive a 30" LCD...that's amazing :Q But not $1799 amazing! haha

Sadly, i missed out on some deals...a co-worker got the old model (clearance) for $1100 CND including 3 yr. extended warranty :Q, & today i finished a BootCamp setup on the last old model for a customer for a similar price.

None left for me at that price :(

this thread is entertaining.

kudos to kaido for sticking with it...

i use a mac all day at work
and a PC all night at home.

if I weren't a windows power user, i'd be a lot more likely to enjoy my mac
i'd still choose vista over macos anyday
