Mouse Systems had a laser mouse that operated on a reflective mousepad with a grid. Laser mice are not new. Logitech has a new twist on an old thing

Did anyone say optical mice were new?

In the old days they did require special pads, and they did tend to cost more than balled mice which were pricey to begin with
