To be fair, it's not the same Intel chips they were claiming the PowerPC's were faster than, so it's not all that easy to compare. For what they did the PowerPC chips were great, but Apple has wanted faster chips for a while now, and IBM just hasn't delivered, Intel will.

not really.. OSX is horribly slow: check out anandtech's review of OSX as a server platform: it is consistently slower than an opteron setup anywhere from 2-5x. Even putting a PPC chip on linux will double its speed over OSX in most instances IIRC.
