Wow, jury duty couldn't have come at a better time...

So I'm going on spring break in March, today I get the notice to report for jury duty 2 days before I leave. If I get selected it will completely F me because I've put down about $500 for this trip. Also I will probably be losing a whole day's pay, because I don't think my company would pay for jury duty.

Is there any way around this? Will they force me to serve no matter what?

Man, the mail today sucked.

simply make a comment like "I hate white people" or "I hate people richer than me, and I hate people poorer than me" Just make sure they know you are biased in some way, and they will dismiss you.

oh, forgot to add "If anyone gets brought to trial its because God knows they are guilty and wants them convicted, regardless of the information" that one works every time

Yeah, just make sure you get all the follow-up questions correct or get thrown in jail for perjury.

Well you could ignore the advice of the idiots in this thread and do what Sukhoi suggests. That's what I and most civic minded adults in this country would do. YMMV.

I've already had jury duty sent to me twice and I've only been elligible for two years! I skipped them both, though. The first one, I never got the letter because it was sent to my parents. (I'm at a different address in college.) When I did get it, I called in and they said it was okay.

The second one, I just said I was in a different city for college and they let me off. I would like to serve jury duty, though... just to learn the process.

I've been requested once by the state I grew up in. Unfortunately I was in another state for college at the time. I sent them the response telling them that the jury duty time conflicted with college and was let off the hook.

I'm glad too because the trial was for a triple homicide.

I bought my house from, well, an asshole. A letter came the other day sumoning him to Jury duty. Hmmm, what to do

It sounds horrible, but if you can act like a bigot during the selection process they won't pick you... hell, sneak a random racial slur in and no way will they pick you... it sounds bad, but I've had friends do it on purpose to get out of it and it works.

One of my friends just told me that you can get out of it if you're a student...is that true??

Yes, that is true. Not sure if it is like that everywhere though. (I live in Houston). I just got a jury summons. And on the back it lists the exemptions you can claim. One of them is (Student enrolled in college and registered for classes.) I don't even have to appear. Just circle the exemption that applies to me and mail it back in.

Thanks for the name calling, but its a serious option. It is definitely your duty as an american to help the judicial system out, but if you call them and ask for deferment, and for some reason they say no, you can do what is within your power.

Lets put it this way. If you have spring break planned out, and want to be there, and not in a trial, they won't force you. Why? Simply because they want people who are there and will focus on the case. Even if you went and simply said while being questioned "I really dont want to be here, I already paid for a trip for spring break" they would probably drop you. People who dont want to be somewhere and missing vacations tend to be somewhat in a bad mood. Bad mood = guilty. They would probably drop you quickly.

PS forgot to mention, some of my quotes were meant to be somewhat humorous, as attempted humor does appear to pervade this forum

if you tell them you have a vacation planned and a huge deposit put down they will let you reschedule it.

I have been asked twice to do jury duty. the first time i was in the same boat. i had a vacation planned and i just called the number and told them that. they let get out of it.
the second time they cancelled it the day before i was sopposed to go. which bummed me out i want to be on one. i think it would be a good experiance.

If the defendant is a different race than you, all you gotta say is "dagnabbit I hate those damned ******....I bet he's guilty! They's always gittin inta trouble around here..."

All you need to do is call to reschedule. If you're a student they won't dismiss you, but can reschedule (that's how it works here anyways). There isn't even any guarantee that they need you, there's a number you need to call on your day to see if they picked you.
