I was just watching 'American High' reruns on PBS, and this oone girl and her mom are talking to a collge counciler in her school, and the counsler says "Would you be OK if Allie decided not to go to college?"
Her mom like spzed "NO! I WILL NOT HAVE MY DAUGHTER THROW HER LIFE AWAY"
What if she wanted to go to nursing school? or something like that. Neither of my parents went to college. My moms a nurse and my dad is a toolmaker. They want me to go to college, but if i wanted do something else, fine. I feel sorry for allie :(

my parents would be very mad if i didn't go, my dad went 4yr to become an engineer, even tho he doesnt do that now, and my mom went only a lil. i look at it this way, as long as i have a 4 year degree, no matter what the degree is in or how bad the economy gets i could always go to the military and start out as an officer, that's just a backup plan if there's no need for comp sci people in 4 yrs.

I can empathize w/ the situation... only a little though..

Back in the day when I was in Jr. High and high school, my parents were really anal and spend a lot of money for me to get private tutors to enhance my learning process... they spend a lot of money... and I did reap the benefits from it... however, as I grew older, I was able to tell them that I can do things on my own and that they should let me decide what is the the best course of action for ME to take...

When they heard this, they had a hard time comprehending it... but I stuck to my principles and after a while, they learned to back off a bit and let me live my life... thank goodness it all workout and my grades didn't drop or else I would've heard no end to my "shanagans" :)

All parents want the best for their children... some just want it so bad that they decide that they have to take matters into their own hands and control their child's every move...

I personally don't think this is a good way to raise a child... I think that a parent should be firm and supportive in the education process of the child, not anal and repulsive ;)

P.S. I love my mom and dad :D

Jittos I wouldn't be too worried...keep in mind the beauty of CS is that you can write your own software to sell to people. Not to mention despite the economic slowdown...the people that get let go first are the people with visas. oh yeah not to mention with PDA's becoming increasingly popular, software can go the untraditional route (rather than programming for a computer). :)

I think one of the best routes to follow in the CS deptartment is AI. We need people program the robots of the future! Seriously though, if I were ever to get into CS...i'd study AI because it's a new and ever growing field.
