Wow, IDE really hogs the CPU compared to SCSI

Working with large files, defragmenting, large file transfers, IDE really slows everything down compared to my 10,000rpm Fujitsu drives :Q. I was just running a Java App in IE and started a file transfer to one of my IDE drives, OUCH, talk about performance hit.

Meh, just my SCSI vs. IDE take, SCSI is crazy fun if you can afford it 😀.

I was trying to say that when you do a virus scan while using an IDE drive, the system will bog

when on SCSI, you will not notice any slowdown

That's the exact type of difference I'm talking about, it's like the SCSI drives have a mind of their own :Q.

I really miss using my SCSI setup....

but i should be running 2 Raptor drives by the end of the year 🙂

Yep.

SCSI rules, but it does come at a cost.

It's worth it in the long run, I've not had to format and re-install XP since I got my drives (quite a while back) and those frustrating slowdowns are a thing of the past.

Night and day difference for someone who uses their computer as an entertainment center/work station.

I know, but got my home usage, my storage requirements are too great for SCSI to be viable, unless I happen to win some lottery, which seems rather unlikely considdering that I don't play on any 🙂

I seriously doubt any home user would store massive amounts of data using SCSI. It is too expensive and impractical. For my home computer, I use a fast SCSI system in my main machine, and a file server of large IDE drives.

When Intel comes out with their chipset supporting PCI-X, I'll be moving to Ultra 320 SCSI, with some 15,000RPM Cheetahs.

The E7505 has been out for nearly a year. 🙂

The only hope for fast desktop solutions would be pci-e.

Currently, PCI-X is in the worksatan realm which means Xeon.

Cheers!

The answer to the high cost of SCSI is to go with prior generation technology. I bought 4 18 gig 10,000 RPM U2W Cheetahs and a Mylex RAID controller for about $400 on the surplus/used market. I wound up with a RAID 5 setup with good speed and more capacity than I will ever need. I know that there is a lot of desire to be on the bleeding edge but if you can restrain yourself there are a lot of good buys on servicable equipment out there.

Sorry that is what I meant, PCI Express.

I have an 18gig scsi drive for my OS and 120gb IDE for games/downloads, I don't notice the difference anymore (it's been installed for about a year) but I am afraid to install my OS on the 120gig drive :>

10,000RPM Fujitsu MANs are pretty cheap up to 80gigs, I got two for right around $280 on the FS/FT forums so that was a steal I'll admit.

Maxtor is the way to go for affordable SCSI, and you can usually find used/oem drives floating around for decent prices.

I'll go 15k when PCI Express comes out as well 😀.

I used IDE for storage as well.
