Well I was pulled over today because my plates did not match my vehicle. My dad has been driving on these plates for a year until I got the vehicle and then the 4th day I got to drive it I get pulled over.

The ploice officer was like, "I pulled you over because your plates are for a 2008 Jeep Wrangler".(I drive a 1989 G20 Van)

I was like, Whaaat?

He then asked for my fathers number and called and tried to explain to him what happened. After that he calls the Secretary of State and they tell him oops, we accidentally switched one number around, that 2 should be a 3.

Stupid ass state. That wasted one hour of my day today, and I was pissed.

So the state computer system had the plates entered wrong?

Wonder how often that happens.

Well I went into a gas station and he was taking radar across the street. I then pulled out and went straight to my house on the other block and I saw that he took the back way to meet me head on and waved me to pull in to my driveway.

I gas he ran them at when my van was sitting....

So how did he know your plates didn't match?

My plate number shoud have been 203S on the last 4 digits but it was 202S.

So you've had the car for a year and did not match the plate # against the car registration (make, model, year). I wonder how this can go unnoticed for so long.

Dude, the cop was doing his job, could see that you were innocent and went the extra mile by calling your Dad and then straightening it out with the secretary's office.

It could have been sooo much worse.

Well I just got the car 4 days ago and never thought of checking it. My father doesn't really double check paper work and usually throws it in a big tub of other paperwork.

I am just hoping the guy with my plate didnt do anything reckless. ;).

I understand this and he was very understanding, I am just mad it wasted an hour of my time. I am glad he was doing his job, if anything I am mad at the state for screwing up my plates.

Cops here do that all the time. They'll just get behind random folks on the highway and type their plate # in their little computer, then move on if there's nothing interesting. It's the best way to find those with outstanding warrants or stolen cars.

They are starting to use cameras connected to their computers to do it automatically.

Go to the DMV ASAP and verify that it has been fixed/switched. It should show the correct licence # in your registration, village sticker, and probably that pollution test. It took a cop to find out that something was wrong. And yes, running plates is SOP. I wonder if the owner of the 2008 Jeep Wrangler has been informed.

Ya, the cop told me to go to the currency exchange to ask what happened and they informed me to go to the DMV. I plan on going tomorrow to get everything fixed.

We live in Illinois bro. It's a given every government entity is only marginally better than a mugger jonesing for crack.

Really? As far as I know most officers do this in order to find out if the driver is suspended/ has a warrant or the vehicle is stolen. I think they only need probably cause to pull you over not just to run the plate.

All state police are equipped with automatic plate scanner.

Not just Illinois. All states were equipped with the technology

Automatic License Plate Recognition

Local Massachusetts Police Department Expand Use Of License Plate Scanning and Monitoring

As I first commented on nearly two years ago, Massachusetts police departments are actively purchasing and deploying radical technologies for monitoring the movements of ordinary law abiding citizens. We are all being scanned, monitored, and sorted as either suspected of something, or not. But even if you are not suspected of anything, your movements (by means of your car location) are tagged with time, date and GPS location, and stored indefinitely.

The most frightening part of this is the passive historical monitoring that is taking place. Mentioned in the news report is how the data can be used in other ways: some legitimate, some highly questionable. It reads:

"...if someone denies he was at a location the night before but the license plate scanner had driven by that location at that same time, police could look through the scanner?s records and know the person is lying."

The more of these systems that are on the road, the more often your movements are being logged by the government. And this information will be used against you whenever they feel it is necessary. There no warrant necessary for anyone to collect or access this data.

And unlike Fastlane systems for automatic toll payments which tracks your use of the Turnpike, you can't just choose not to use it. You cannot opt out of this intrusion.

We are all suspects now.

Well it's a good thing it was noticed and fixed. Imagine the confusion if your vehicle had been stolen and they were trying to track it down using vehicle make and plate match.
