My yamaha 8/8/24 CDRW drive broke down about 3 months ago. Right now I have a LiteOn 48/12/48. Today I had nothing to do so I opened up the yamaha drive to inspect. I noticed that it was really dusty inside with lots of dust balls everywhere. So I got a bottle of compressed air and cleaned it out. I also cleaned the lens with some rubbing alcohol. Afterwards I tried it on my PC and voila! Its working again! So now I have an extra CDRW and donno what to do with it....Cheers!

I have a malfunctioning Pioneer DVD drive that I have done this to 3 or 4 times in the last 2 years. It will read a few discs and then it craps out on me again. I wish I could figure out why mine won't stay "fixed".

I had an old Toshiba 4X SCSI CD-rom drive that was just sitting around for the last 5+ years. I remembered it just quit reading disks so I stashed it. I got around to cleaning my closet and I rediscovered it. I had a spare PC with SCSI controller built-in the mobo and it has no CD drive so I hooked it up just for fun. I also noticed that there was a firmware update for it (after all these years!) so I flashed it. Lo and behold! It now reads EVERYTHING (besides DVD's of course). The only problem is that it won't do DAE so I need an audio cable for it. But not bad for an old drive:)

My ps2 won't read any dvd's anymore, only cd's now. Do you guys think I can just open it up and blow out all the dust and it'll work again? Also, the dvdrom drive on my laptop won't read cd's anymore, only dvd's now. I'm not so sure I can go about opening that up though. Just my luck =(

Hmmm, I have a broken yamaha burner and a broken DVD. Both are recognized by windows and will sorta kinda but not really work. I think I'll give this cleaning thing a shot.

For sure I would bet on it, I have seen crazy people have to do this!

See, my ranting about how important case cleaning is isn't a load of BS. Most people just think I'm meticulous, but dammit, cleaning can improve operation!
