Wow... I just realized that I have mostly forgotten how to write in cursive.

Kinda feels pathetic. I realized while teaching myself to write with my other hand. I guess it's because I mostly type and write in print now. The only time I ever use cursive anymore is when signing something, but that barely resembles anything legible now anyways 😛

I still have minor elements of cursive; most of my letters are loosely connected, but they certainly aren't full out fancypants.

then why do we have to "sign" our name?
as if printing our name is not good enough for a legal document...

When they ask you to print your name, they just want clearly legible letters. When they ask you to sign, you can either use cursive, print, or scribble. Whatever you want.

i remember back when i was in 3rd / 4th grade (im 25 now) they said we'll have to learn to write cursive for high school, college etc. they really made a big deal about teaching it back then.

I'm in the same boat, the little bit that I do write is printed.. otherwise I feel like a dumbass stopping to remember how to form some letters.

I don't even like actually WRITING. I blame the schools that made me switch from my left to my right hand.

What did they do, break your left?

No, they put one of those triangle thingies on the pencil and told me to use my other hand. I was 4, not really ready to stand up to authority at that point, ya know? 😛

i loved all that BS about needing it in HS/College, i never wrote anything other then my notes by hand in most of HS and college

did you grow up in Soviet Russia?

as for the topic, I too suck at the cursive. I stopped using it ~4th grade, once it ceased to be a requirement. all I can do in cursive is sign my name, even though the last name trails off after the first letter into a smudge of scribbled lines.....

Billy: Bunt. B-U-N-T, in perfect cursive. Got any more brain busters?
Ms. Vaughn: How about 'Rizzuto'?
[Billy ponders, then writes]
Ms. Vaughn: Rirruto?
Billy: Those'r are Z's.
Ms. Vaughn: They look like R's to me.
Billy: You're cheating! Rizzuto's not a word! He's a baseball player!

one day i was writing a note to remind myself of something and it wasnt until i finished that i realized that i had wrote the whole thing out in cursive. it just happened randomly; and now whenever i write something like a grocery list or a post-it note to somebody that its always in cursive. im looking at a note on my desk right now and the top half is printed and the bottom half, a small to-do list is in cursive. go figure.

My signature is literally a scribble. It in no way resembles my actual name, or anything from the english language for that matter.

This was in Nebraska. It was during the Cold War, maybe you're on to something!

I had to copy a 400 word agreement in cursive on a document, and then sign/date it. Those were the ugliest 400 words I have written in a long time.

I dont think I ever learned cursive. My signature is just the letter of my first name and last name and some scribble after that.

cursive truly is useless. And yes i remember my teachers preaching i had to learn it, boy just another thing they were wrong about all these years. They even brain washed me to believe pluto was actually a planet!

I remember them telling me that writing in cursive was faster.

Now, my writing speeds are:

1) Typing
2) Print.
3) Typing hunt and peck.
4) Printing with my toes.
5) Printing with pencil clamped by ass.
...
23) Morse code.
24) Hieroglyphics.
25) Stone tablet chiseling.
...
94) Cursive.

I always wondered what purpose it served. Like LoKe said, without good marksmanship, it looks down right fugly and unreadable. It's mostly just to decorate gift cards and invitations with.
