Wow, I just had my first bible class

A university just opened up a campus in my area, and since I need to complete my BA, I signed up.. On scheduling classes, they mentioned all of the 'core' classes are full, and they were putting me in a required class.. "Introduction to the Bible", taught from an academic perspective..

This thread really makes my stance clear.

In any case, I have never heard anyone discuss creationism seriously, using public opinion polls to justify the topic.. (Response: St. Augustaine said any science was an abandonment of faith) and encouraged us to listen to the culture war on conserative AM radio.

Looking around the room of 15, there were 3 pastors, and several wearing "Jesus' brand shirts and baseball caps.. As the first class at a new college, I think I'm in the deep end of the pool, and I've been warned that some students are very aggressive.

What did I get into?

If tought from the academic perspective (even if you are not of the faith) it is still a very interesting area to read about. Usually the first level course would cover the "old testament."

What he said, I am an atheist but I'd wouldn't have a problem with taking the class. I'd stay way in the back and do my best to avoid talking to anyone.

It's an adult class that meets once a week for seven weeks. They spent the first 2 hours going over the differences between what books are left out in Protestant, Roman Catholic, Greek, etc, names of all the books. Then went into literary criticism.

Even differences aside, I have little experience with the text, and am rather intimidated.

The professor said he?s a teacher, but also a pastor, and will not deny his Christian faith. I am 99% this is going to be a uberRepublican discussion in the coming weeks.

Sounds like your mind is very open, perfect for a University setting.

For balance listen to:

"The Historical Jesus" (24 Lectures); The Teaching Company. July 2000.
By Bart Ehrman

If you go into it with an open mind you'll definitely learn a lot. I'm an agnostic but I always try to keep an open mind and not make any judgements without hearing all the facts. I've made so many mistakes in the past by making snap conclusions, now I'm learning to take my time before passing judgements.

yeah i agree with Arkitech. keep an open mind and extract whatever useful information you can out of it. The Bible can tell you a lot about human nature.

i'm a practicing catholic, but i'm starting to question organized religion in general. I need to read up on more stuff but I just never get around to it.
