The Dark Tower, The Gunslinger by Stephen King. all i can say is, wow! I can't wait to read the second novel, The Drawing of the Three. I've never read any of Stephen King's book and one day at my school there was a "flee market" book fair. $5 bucks a book, and as i was looking and browsing I found this book, and said "why not". Boy am i glad i took that book from that shelf. Anyone read this book?

I used to read a lot of Kings? work, until the last of the Gunslinger series. It was great, until the end. I got the impression that King was tired of writing the story and in stead of providing a decent finished work, he just up and quit. I was very disappointed. Have you read the Bachman books (Running Man, The Long Walk, etc,)? Those were some of Kings best shorts. I also like the Four Past Midnight collection... short, but very sweet.

King is still writing the gunslinger books. There are going to be at least 8 all told (if he stay out of the way of oncomming traffic, that is!!) so its not even near done. Some of his other books tie in with the series like The Stand, Insomnia, and Hearts in Atlantis.

THE DARK TOWER books are the best books i've read from Stephen King ,thats just my opinion ,many will probably disagree.
I almost gave up on this series when reading the 1st book THE GUNSLINGER ,it was kind of boring till u got 3/4 of the way thru it then it took off.I reread it after reading the rest of the series and it was a better read the 2nd time thru.
The other books in the series so far
THE DRAWING OF THE THREE
THE WASTELANDS
WIZARDS & GLASS
are all great reads .you'll be hooked :)
The 5th book tentatively titled THE CRAWLING SHADOW is being worked on as we speak supposedly.I guess we'll see that sometime in 2002 :( .I'm getting antsy waiting for the story to continue.

Sorry DannyLove... didn't mean to disappoint, but I didn't exactly give any spoilers either. I think that I was disappointed because I enjoyed the series so much, I was hoping for a little more. You may totally disagree and, frankly, I hope that you do, that way we have more to discuss in the next forum ;-)

GrIner's comment doesn't even make sense. Yeah, if the series ended with Wizard and Glass, I'd be disapointed too, but it doesn't. There's still 3 or 4 more books to be written!

I read this one: WIZARDS & GLASS. In my opinion, this was so bad it was incredible. Sometimes I wonder if he had a ghostwriter write that book. I loved his stuff like Four Seasons. It's hard to believe both books were written by the same author. I couldn't believe how weak the writing was and how it relied so heavily on so many stale, overused cliches and language styles. I'm glad others enjoyed it, but I found it abysmal.

FrogDog, it sounds like your take personal offense to the fact that I may have been disapointed. Shouldn't a single part of the series be able to stand alone? And after reading Wizard and Glass what is the motivation to hold out hope that the next part will be any better?

I read the first 3 a looong time ago, and loved them. I never got around to reading the Wizard and the Glass. I'll have to pull out the first 3 and pick up TW&TG from half.com or something as soon as I finish rereading The Talisman, which is another great King book (cowritten by Peter Straub). :)

cool, we'll it really doesnt matter if some say that the 3rd book sucks, its not going to stop me from reading it. I'm probably going to pick up a copy of the drawing of the three and continue with the story. So far i'm amazed. In the end of the book King talked about how this novel or series might be a little too long and that he may not even finish writing it (it his time of course), which leads me to read some more! i hope he finishes it, cool, thanks guys, i will continue reading!
