So I work retail at an outlet mall, and this evening the President and Vice-President of Direct-to-Consumer just dropped in. They were "in the area" but didn't visit the other store less than an hour away. They took some pictures, walked the floor with me, and asked questions. Overall I think it went well they had some constructive criticism. But OMG it freaked me out worse than the mall's UPS driver sneaking up behind and yelling "BOO!" I was the Supervisor on shift, the manager and asst. manager weren't there.

Any of your other ppl in retail, is this normal?

I haven't worked retail in a few years, but when I worked at Target, I think the bigwigs were nice enough to warn the store before they dropped in. Same when I worked at Barnes & Noble.

Fortunately I worked nightshift, and never had to deal directly with the tours. I just had to deal with them pushing off trucks so the stockers would have more time available to make the store look abnormally pretty so the higher-ups could come in for their usual brown-nosing sessions. Then the next night we'd be buried in freight to put out, as we'd have that night's trucks as well as those pushed off on the previous night.

That nightshift was kind of cool. For those of you who have seen it, you may know of the Walmart Cheer. It's something conjured up by a simple-minded moron, and it involves having the shift meeting out on the sales floor, finished up with this cheer. It's an amusing yet unsettling sight to behold.
The shift managers tried to get the night shift amped up just doing this in the break room. Participation was minimal. A few people would leave before it began, and some just stopped coming to those meetings altogether. Eventually management got the message, and we no longer did that stupid ritual.
