Sorry, I didn't read the refurb part. But if I'd ever buy anything refurbed, I'd buy speakers. If they work outa the box, they probably will last you a while. Besides, these are cool silver/black ones that I haven't seen in any local stores.
I would buy these if I didn't already have a 5.1 setup. I gots these speakers @ work, and they rock. I'm thinking that the silver you are seeing is the glossy reflection in the picture...to my knowledge, altec lansing did not make silver/black ATP5s.
I wonder what the "X" stands for in the model number. A search did not come up with a match for that. The geeks seldom make model number mistakes, but often buy special OEM versions of products with different features than the national product. Anyone know what the X is ?
You'll find reviews are mixed......Avault was kind of hard on them......
What I noticed is that the sub is tight and clean all the way to full volume....The 3" driver and the 2 tweeters in each sat are full and clear....you can really crank these speakers if you want and the sound stays very clean.....They are much better than the 54's or 56's.....much better.....The seperate bass and treble adjustment is real handy...The downward firing 3" sounds great altough I could see how they might be a concern if you had to mount them on a stand because I would think you would want them to be sitting on a hard surface to sound best....
I believe that the "X" in an altec lansing product means that it is a factory refurbished item.
Everything else looks to be the same, otherwise. I too would trust a set of refurbished speakers. Probably have been tested more than the new ones on the line.
