As if the current state of the graphics and info wasn't meh enough.............

16 players max in multiplayer
This is from IGN.COM

Following Microsoft's strategic reveal of Halo 3 last week, the French Official Xbox Magazine (OXM) today added new fuel to the Covenant fire. The magazine details were revealed by a European reader on Bungie's Website (and then quickly pulled off) but a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed with IGN the French OXM was given official Halo 3 details.

First the multiplayer goodness: According to OXM, Halo 3's multiplayer mode has a maximum of 16 players, not more like many people has speculated. The Valhala map (which was revealed along with Snowbound and High Ground) is inspired by, similar to, and more or less an improved version, of Blood Gulch; but it's not a remake. And the cannon, referred to loosely as the "Man Cannon," works with both explosive barrels and vehicles. The gameplay mechanic enables players to be shot into the air like human missiles and they can then, from mid-air, shoot at and be shot at by enemies.

The magazine also reported you can add gamers without having them on your friends' list, and listed a bunch of new multiplayer types: NinjaBall (keep the ball at all costs), TankFlag (a very powerful "tank" will carry the flag, but in turn it will be much more powerful), and Elimination (kill five opponent team members).

The current screenshots of Halo 3 aren't nearly as good as the final build will be, insists Bungie in the OXM article, which also reported the game is still in its alpha stage of development. Bungie staff members used the last month to build additional software for Halo 3 on Xbox 360, and insisted that Halo 3 will be done "when it's ready." Will Peter Moore show us the release date on his bicep next year? Stay tuned!

Other details: For those wondering about the handling of the Warthog and Ghost, they control similarly to the vehicles in Halo 2. The Spartan Laser is a powerful guided weapon that requires three seconds to lock-on and fire and uses a guidance system. The highly touted X button is currently "unused," but will be part of Bungie's overall re-imagining of the controls. A new feature loosely called the Movie Maker enables players to capture approximately 10 seconds and possible 30 seconds of multiplayer footage to show off to friends (this last detail was vague and of a more speculative nature).

We'll have more when Bungie gives it up!

that's a very very small online game
most PC shooters allow up to 32, some up to 64... 32v32 is an insanely fun match

Resistance: Fall of Man will allow up to 40 for online play.. looking forward to those matches, because the weaponry looks fun. :)

The most you should have for the larger maps they way they were designed is 16. For the smaller maps, it's 8. I hardly ever played the Big Team Battle matchmaking games, it's fun to fool around with but not that great. Competitive custom MLG games were the ******, those are the kind of games where a lot less BS happens. Personally, I would favor more time spent designing the balance of the weapons and the layout of the maps then making some 64 player humongous map where all you do is the least skilled activities in the game. Of course, if you consider Halo a game you play casually, then you are probably the reason Bungie made Halo 2 more "noob friendly".

Halo 3 is so far out right now that I wouldn't be at all surprised if they upped it to 24 before too long. They'll hear the grumblings, and they'll do something about it. As for me, I think 16 is enough anyhow, but I can see why others want more.

And before anyone starts calling out the name of Resistance on the PS3 (ya, you destrekor), let's see if it's even playable or not. Sony's online setup is going to be new, on a new platform none-the-less, so we'll see how 40 players actually work out before claiming it the king of console multiplayer.

Halo2 has been the most successful multi-player game on the Xbox and the Xbox 360. They're probably looking at it in the "why mess with success" category.

From what I've read, it is only a couple of multi-player maps that will be 40 players. The rest are smaller.

No, first you'll need 40 people with a PS3 to play online!

Meh... serious matches have very few people anyway. I've been in a couple of clans in PC FPS games and the matches were never very large. Massive 32 player matches are to amuse the masses.

*sigh* I hate the hatred of Halo that goes on in the computer world. That's like saying that CS is crap because it only has 32 players, whereas the battlefield series has 64. And planetside has thousands..it must be the best game of all!

They're different types of games. I'm glad they're going to keep the cap at 16..which right now in Halo 1 and 2 is already not much fun to play at. It's only good for the biggest levels.

The best Halo 2 match is a 4 on 4. It's just the way the game is meant to be played, and that's how it is fun.

agree, except 2 games dont make much of a franchise. even halo 2 did not really have anything on halo 1. I dont expect much out of halo 3.

Too bad Vivendi ran that franchise into the ground.

No No No. The rules of ATOT clearly state that Halo sucks/is overrated/is overhyped and you must never never never ever say so otherwise.

lol

I just hope GTHD has at least 10+ or whatever number they quoted. 4 or 6 is a bit sh!t in a race imo...

16 is quite a few players for non 'massive' maps imo. 8v8 on CS:S was good fun :)

Lets not forget that iPods suck (well, i'd agree with that one), DSLRs are godly, and every thread needs pics ;)
