Wow, far cry is intense on the hardware

My machine is by no means slow.

But wow, Im getting sluggish frame rates during battle. It comes to no surprise, however, since this game looks just as graphically enhanced as the screen shots of HL2 if not better. Or even up to D3's magnitude.

I don't believe anybody can play this game with max settings @ 1260 x 1024 with any AA/AF. I just find it inconceivable even on a overclocked P4EE with a 9800XT.

I even took a look at the page file it used. Over 500,000k in memory usage!

ATI and Nvidia better stop pedaling and bring those puppies out now because I need it.

Yeah, it's a beast. I think games are the only thing that keep the computer industry moving forward for faster hardware.

Funny thing is that I remember hearing people cry about how software should catch up to the hardware because the 9700p's and 5800's were over kill etc... Times have changed in-deed. Now the hardware guy's have to catch up the software guy's.

The demo runs fairly decent on my system. I think it would be a bit smoother if I had more ram but with a Raptor it doesn't slow down TOO much. IMO I think HL2 beta looks better from a game play stand point than Far cry. HL2 looks more realistic while Far Cry seems cartoonish to me. Both love memory though so while moving fast or driving a vehicle is where it lags most for me. Both are great games so far as I plan on buying both.

I played the Demo as well, and believe me, it does not compare to the retail version. Not unless you play it by 1024x 768 with minimal detail. Yuck. lol.

So is the full version more taxing on the system than the demo? I run the two demos just fine in 1024x768 with all the settings maxed and with 4x AA and it runs fine. I have to cut AAF off because if I don't, I get some black textures on the rocks. I'm running a 2500+ (OCed to a 3200), 1GB of PC3200 RAM and a Sapphire 9800 Pro. I'm trying to decide about the full version. It'll probably be an impulse buy this weekend when the wife and I go out.

I had some bad side affects of using AA/AF in the demo as well Tom. But rest assure that's why they call them Demo's thankfully :) . Textures and the environments do seem to be a little more vibrant then Far Cry's demo. And all the glitches seem to be fixed.

1280x1024 really isn't an option.
Running a P4C oc'd to 3.6Ghz and Radeon 9800 oc'd doesn't cut it for smooth game play.

1024x768 is only playable, but not perfect.

1GB of memory is a must.

This guy say it's silky smooth on an "AMD Athlon XP 2200+ (~1800mhz), 1gb DDR333, 128mb Radeon 9800 Pro, 7200rpm HDD", but he doesn't say what res.

To get your frames per second, hit your ~ key to open the console then:

\r_displayinfo 1

(use Tab to get the \ to appear)

To turn it off, it's \r_displayinfo 0

With my Barton @ 2.35Ghz, 1GB Ram, and a 5900u 256MB flashed to 5950u oc'd to 550/975, I dared not go over 1024x768 with max settings (AA on low). Frames were around 30FPS generally, and while I could play it, I'd get slowdown in certain spots.

After some adjustments to some settings, I've found a nice looking and nice performance balance of 70-110FPS.

Oh, and water setting on Ultra High looks amazing.

So is this thing just video card limited?
I wonder how much cpu power comes into play?

Everyone make sure to PM Derek or Anand to make sure this game makes it into the R420/NV40 reviews coming up.

I just took a look at the system requirements and noticed that it only comes on DVD. That's AWESOME!

The FarCry Demo was the first one I've come across that I couldn't run at full settings...

P4 2.4 w/533FSB
512MB RDRAM
120gig HD (2mb)
ATI Radeon 9700 TX
Audigy 2

Just walking around was fine, but as soon as anything exploded, wham... it lags like a mofo.

I play the full version on my p4 3.06ghz / 1gb PC2700 at 1280x1024 without any kind of AA or AF.
I have a Radeon 9800 Pro AIW
for the most part it runs very well, except some indoor fights, the engine seems to rendor outdorr environments a lot faster thank god.
The carrier (interior) is the first time I saw any hint of sluggishness

Do you notice a lot of jaggies or unclear textures with AA/AF off? Maybe AA/AF is whats killing my performance other than the hi-res. Then of course, a combo of both.

since i've played Half-Life for 6 or 7 years, I can't play any game at any resolution other than 1024x768, if i do my aim gets thrown off...sad but true.

no benching tools with the game then? I hassled them for some form of benchmarking tool to be included. Oh well, did the same for PB and networking settings, two out of three aint bad :D

I took one look at the game and I didn't even bother turning on AA or AF. All I have set are the settings to detect my system, and it happened to set everything to the highest.

So far the jaggies are not that bad, the game seems fine, so I'm not gonna fix it for now. I may try adjusting settings to accomodate AA/AF later on but I can't imagint it looking any better.
on a 19" LCD playing in the native resolution using DVI, it looks fantastic already
