..and they appear to be taking their ball and going home.
http://foxnews.com/story/0,2933,27391,00.html

But after European regulators this past week demanded billions of dollars in divestitures Welch didn't anticipate and would not accept, he said the move made him realize "you are never too old to get surprised."

more anti american behavior.. it is rather clear that europe does not have our best interests at heart. Clearly they are mad that the United States will not join their pursuit towards a globalized/centralized world.

..we're going to sit over here and mind our own business while you guys in europe attempt globalization. Just don't take your anger out on american corprorations.

It's a bit more complicated, isn't it? The anit-monopoly authorities in the US and the EU are thinking very much the same way. That has nothing to do with "nationalistic" thinking. And to lable every decision which is not for the benefit of an US company as anti-american, is somewhat off the point. The point is: Is it good for our economies
and consumers that even the biggest companies are merging? At the end you have in each field dominating players, which will increase prices and slow down research and reduce customer care. What we need is more and not less competition.

What are you saying? French "peasants"? labeling things as "Anti-american" isn't definitely going to solve the problem. You just proved that there's mutual distrust between Europe and the U.S., but it's definitely to be found, in this case, on your side of the pond!

Can't you understand that the United Europe is following different economic principles than yours? or are you saying "All is well as long as we control the world" ?

You want geopolitics, here's my prediction: Two blocks of power are emerging here, in the 21st century, and I bet you that they will be the dominant players in the world arena, 25 years from now: Europe and the U.S.

Similar in total land mass
Similar in total population
Similar in technology and know-how
Different in thinking (individualism vs. communitarianism)

And if Russia ever joins the E.U. the "old continent" shall again have all the aces on its side. You guys (Americans) are way too obsessed with money and power to see anything else, and that is not a wise policy in the long run.

Well thank you for summing up the U.S. view on domestic economical policy in two sentences.

While we are generalizing, you guys (socialists) are 'way too' obsessed with other nations policies/practices to be serious about your own. 'You guys' are 'way too' obsessed with bringing the United States down to your level of competition rather than dispense of your socialistic ways and join us on tier 2. Sadly further attempts to bring the United States down to your level will only keep you at that level.. rather you should see what you can do about competing with us rather than envying us.

<< The unification of one Europe will NEVER happen. >>

Why do you say that?
It wont perhaps be all the countries in Europe but in the future all west Europe will be united and a big part of east Europe.

try three... E.U. U.S. and PRC. What will happen is the european setup will befriend the chinese and attempt to undermine U.S. trade influence.. the chinese will exploit this beyond recognition and manage to accidentally invade a friend or member of the E.U. and the E.U. will come running to the U.S. for aid in their time of need.

Meanwhile Russia will be holding its finger on the trigger thanks to the uneasiness the E.U.'s global domination attempt has caused.

Oh I get it, Globalization was all Europes doing, hmmm. All those American Multi-national corporations had nothing to do with it, I suppose. Ok.

Relations between the US and Europe are a little tense at the moment. There's the ongoing grain subsidies(although this is so old I don't think anyone but us Canadians are worried about it). The most recent issue I recall has to do with bananas. Seems those Eurobastids have the nerve to want to give some African nations a favored trading status for bananas. Some American corps complained and there has been tension between the US and Europe since.

So I suppose, that when one party does something that affects the other, we're going to hear the cries of those affected. Hence, we have this thread that attempts to read more into something than probably should have been.

I really highly doubt either area will take the lead in 25 years, in fact the areas likely to be strongest are the PRC, and other areas of South Asia, with a rising India. The U.S. and Europe have become far too utopian in atitude to lead the world 25 years hence. It will be the more self-serving countries that will rise to the top.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA.

Oh, well. Icelandic girls are pretty hot, at least . . .

Maybe aliens will invade and we can stop this bickering once we start being used as food and slave labor . . . ;)
