Wow...dust...everywhere in my case and I never saw it...

...I decided to clean my case because from the side window it looked a little dusty. But instead of normally just passing a vaccume tube extender around parts in the case I decided to do a more thorough clean - specifically take apart things like reapply the heatsink and clean the fan and the dust particles on the mobo tray etc.

Um...WOW there was a lot of dust. I looked at the heatsink and noticed that when I touched it (Volcano9 coolmod) dust was easily falling out. I took a ganer and the entire freaking heatsink was fulll of dust! Even the processor where normally empty space would be had dust in it. I have no idea where it came from. Then when I unplugged the mobo and deattached it between the mobo and the tray there was about a 2-3 milimeter FILM of dust. I was amazed!

When I was sticking my ram back in I noticed I couldn't. I took a closer look and the thing had dust in it like no tomorrow. Not in the actual slot where the ram goes - but on each side there are these little metal things that push back when you insert the ram and they were so chock full of dust it wouldn't let the ram in.

I did a LOT of cleaning and even sucked out quite a bit of junk from my powersupply. I think I'm going to do a big clean like this more often...

I just checked the asus probe too (After letting it sit there a while) and processor temps dropped by 8 and my mobo temps by 4....whoa (celcius)

But it made me wonder where in the world it was coming from. My room isn't that dusty at all. Perhaps I leave my computer on too much? I hadn't shutdown in 4 days because I have heard its better to just leave the pc on instead of turning it on and off when someone uses the pc in many short spurts like me.

Anyway I did steal my parent's processor 😉 It was a Tbred B 2200+ that came with the ECS deal for 59.99

All I say I hope it'll OC better than my 1700+ tbred A which was pushing 1750 at its limit...
so if anyone has that and can give me an idea i'd like to know

But if its been a few months and your room is slightly dusty I reccomend to really clean it because I was amazed and am thankful my computer didn't blow up or something like that

A big source of dust is AC ducts. For some reason, I don't know why, but they are usually lined with fiberglass. The fiberglass in these ducts is easily frieable and comes apart and blows out into homes and into lungs where it is very dangerous.

awww I never took pics 🙁 I completely forgot. Well I plan to do another clean before I leave for college in late september so I'll see what will come out.

Either way it makes me wonder what is in our old hp 8240 Pavilion (pentium1 233mhz processor) since I haven't never even opened that save for when we bought it my dad got another 32 meg stick...but that was back in 1998 😉

And yes that is essentially the core of my post 😉 But there was so much I felt compelled to share the story

ROFL

regarding where the dust came from, even in a "clean room" your pc will get more dust because it has fans sucking in air. also it seems to have more dust because you don't vacuum it regularly like a carpet and the dust can build up with abandon in the little crevices (like a home theater receiver).
