So I'm doing community service right now which entails running a local community center while the director is gone. He left for lunch at about 3, told me just a few people might show up to use the facility and that he'd be back in an hour. At about 3:30 a fleet of 5 SUVs show up. Ok, not just a few but I guess I can deal.

But then more cars starting showing up, full of latino's that don't speak english very well, if at all. I don't speak a word of spanish myself so situation is getting weird. Then some white lady shows up and tells me she's supposed to be running a class out of this center at four, but the center is filled with Latino's who apparently are about to have a memorial service!!!!

Fast forward to now, the entire place is PACKED with sobbing latin gang bangers and this lady won't get off my ass about the director not being back yet.

I'm going to make him sign off all my hours for this one, at least fukin warn me.

Here in MI you can just pay $50 per 4 hours of community service instead of actually doing it.

It could be worse, you could have tried to tell the gangbangers no. Be thankful that the white lady is the only one mad.

Sounds like your 'boss' knew what was about to happen and decided to GTFO.

The f*king police are here now, there are two under cover cops at both ends of the block and squad cars.

WHAT THE FUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He said he'd be back at six via a phone call not to long ago, it's now six fifteen, he's not back.

I feel less safe doing these hours than I do doing what I did to earn them ... I'd paythe hours off but my job dose not require me to work full time. I thought I might get a few reference's for myself this way.

If he's willing to lie to me I'm sure he'd do the same for my future employers, he's certainly good at being full of sh*t.

You don't want to use your community service supervisor as a work reference.

use this to your advantage - tough it out for tonight, then go to the judge and say "this is waaaayyy more than i bargained for" and try to get the rest of the time taken off.

Why not? Plenty of people volunteer totally on their own to do community service. If a job called I don't think it would even be legal for the supervisor to explain the circumstances why the person was there. They'd just comment on the work the individual did. "he worked hard, always showed up on time and was a pleasure to be around" A potential employer thinking you did community service out of the goodness of your heart could definitely score you some points.

It doesn't work like that.

Judge assigns comm service and PO. PO sends you to comm service director. Comm service director assigns you to a spot. Supervisor of that spot either signs off on your hours or not.

So basically if you piss off the comm service sup, you are screwed.

LOL Q...

You are not employed by the place you do the service at. As a matter of fact, you aren't employed at all. You are paying your debt to society...or so they say. But the point is that you can't use a place you didn't work at as an employment reference. You could list it under a different section, like criminal history....

...full of latino's that don't speak english very well...

And apparently you don't know how to write English very well.

Then again, you're not exactly one of life's winners if you're doing community service. What did you do to earn this?

What about professional references? I volunteered for a council woman campaign in 2000 and use her as a professional reference to this day. OP didn't say employment reference, using a person you did community service for would make a perfect professional reference depending on the type of jobs you're going after.

OK Q, you are right. He could also use his PO as a reference. Both seem like great ideas.

Yes I'm not aiming for the stars guys that much is clear ...

Anyway, who the hell gets a PO for a traffic ticket? I was in mortgage for eight years, the mortgage crisis hit and the companies I worked for all went under.

My reference's have defected and there's really no other way to gather valid business reference's at this point. I'm not about to start jumping jobs and a reference is not like proof of employment anyway. If you do a job for an employer, he might just like you enough to vouch for you. I've done side jobs contracting for business owners and earned a reference before, I don't see why this would be any different.

In my case I still have a few solid reffs, but I'd like one or two more. Surely there are some good hearts with small business's out there who wouldn't mind considering the circumstance.

This guy however, was a bad choice. In California you can do your service for any business that accepts the help, I chose this place myself, sadly.
